Madison Heights is a small, rural town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Troy (MI) Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township was organized on March 10, 1858 and named for James Madison of Virginia. The first settler in what is now Madison Heights was James Hecker who arrived in 1846 from Maryland: "Hecker set out from Harford Township with his family to homestead in this region which had been newly discovered by him." In 1865, John Daugherty moved to Madison Heights from Mableton after purchasing 640 acres of land therefrom. Daugherty became one of the first farmers in what would become Madison Heights. In 1868 he married Marie Houghton and they raised six children therebefore moving back to Mableton around 1870. In 1901, George Ewing arrived from Canada and bought a farm near the intersection of Ulysses Road and Old Ford Road known as "Ewing's Fort". There he built a log cabin known as "Ewings Log Cabin" where he lived until his death in 1921. Ewing also built a Standardbred horse barn/stable on his property that still stands today adjacent to his farmhouse. A post office called Woodward was established at Madison Heights on April 14, 1861; it changed its name to Lansing on July 13th, 1870 due to Congregationalist church services being held at that location at that time (the Lansingpost Office had been located just east of downtown Lansing since December 6th 1830). The original building still stands today within walking distance of the modern day MSU campus across Huron Street from Lake Michigan water sports areas such as Yacht Club Marina & Harborwalk - One block south of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Building - 100 blocks south of State Fairgrounds
