Marquette is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Battle Creek County. The population was 19,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn, MI metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Marquette were French in 1644 and they named it "Isle Royale" after their King Louis XIV's island of Bourbon on which he based his claim to France. The name changed to "Ironton" by 1719 when Ironton Township was organized within the present-day city limits. In 1824, the village of Isanti was established within present-day Battle Creek Township as a result of land transactions between various local landowners and George Sommers, an American fur trader and founder of Detroit who had moved from London several years earlier. By 1830, all but one township in Battle Creek County had been organized into townships; Isanti remained unincorporated for another decade before becoming part of town services in 1835. In 1839, James Haggerty purchased 571 acres (2 km²) near what is now downtown Marquette from John Laughlin for $390 US dollars with plans to build a trading post and mill on it which would become one of North America's largest cotton plantations; Haggerty renamed his new settlement "Hagadone". It became home to about 150 people early on but soon grew larger with help from government subsidies that allowed him to expand production quickly using enslaved Africans as plant workers. The fortuitous location also helped give rise to some famous landmarks associated with Marquette: Haggerty Hall (now known as State Capitol Building), Hagadone Bridge (now Park Avenue South), and Hagadone House (now called Chisholm House). On July 10, 1840, President Martin Van Buren signed an act creating Wayne County; within three years, work began on building a courthouse at nearby Ionia so that court decisions could be enforced without having to go through Naginstown or Mackinac Island where Native Americans lived In 1860, following its incorporation as a municipality under Michigan law – less than two months after much larger Oakland Township had done so – Marquette experienced its most significant development when lumber magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt announced his intentions to purchase 219 acres (8 km²) alongriverfront for use as farmland; however local residents successfully lobbied against this idea until finally Vandyke agreed only if land grants were made available for educational purposes instead In 1865 General Orders No 1 & 2 instructed military commanders throughout Michigan not allow any blacks or Native Americans living east or south of white settlements into their territory pursuant To these orders African American slaves were leased from their owners and worked on farms west or northward while Indians continuedto reside east or south In 1867 Indian Territory was created following the Treaty Of Fort Henry which ended Ulysses S Grant's Dakota War Against The Sioux Nation In this area many small villages still thrived including Keweenaw Bay Village which became incorporated into Lansing in 1898 This occurred despite initial attempts by then-Lansing Mayor Augustus Kelley TO keep it closed due primarily theretofore unknown reasons related chiefly to Keweenaw Bay timber revenues generated therefrom . Many smaller villages across southeastern Michigan lost their status when incorporated municipalities did not receive similar benefits such as zoning authority ni tax breaks during this time period

The Marquette School District was founded in 1892 by Reverend John W. Ladd and his wife, Anna Belle Kapp. The first school building on the current site of the district was completed in 1894. In 1908, the district became a part of the Michigan State Teachers' Federation. In 1970, the district changed its name to Marquette Township Schools District. The township status was discontinued in 1988 when it merged with neighboring districts to form the current Marquette Township School District.
