In 1849, George Leighton donated 640 acres (25 ha) east of downtown to create what would become Midland Township; he had earlier donated land south of downtown to that effect. The first store in town opened within two years and early transportation options favored wagon trains over horse or buggy travel because there was no railroad available to connect these settlements together until after 1840 when construction began on the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR). By 1860, Midlanders had started referring to their new community as "Mighty Mitten". The GTR reached Lansing via Cass City in 1871 and soon became one of North America's great railways; it helped spur growth throughout southern Upper Michigan and provided essential transportation for goods coming into and out of Detroits largest city.
