Monroe, Michigan is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. The name Monroe comes from the French word "mont" meaning "hill." The town was founded in 1834 by General James Wilkinson as a seat of justice for Wayne County. It was named after Thomas Monroe, an American Revolutionary War general and Governor of Georgia. The first white settler in Monroe was Abram Edwards, who arrived in 1835. He built a cabin on what is now State Road #2 near the present-day city of Monroeville. In 1839, John Capps and his brother Ezra Capps moved to what is now Monroe from Battle Creek and founded the village of Battle Creek on land that they purchased from the Muskegon River tribal council. In 1841,odus Coleman established a store and post office in what is nowMonroe Village about one mile east of battle creek village center on present-day State Road 2A (later US 231). In 1840–1841 also saw the erection of two small frame churches—the First Baptist Church (founded 1840) and Methodist Episcopal church (1841)—in what is today downtown Monroe. These early churches are among the earliest structures erected in Monroe Township; they remain standing today within walking distance of their original locations. In 1851, George Washington Payne left Illinois to emigrate to America with his family and settled down along Genesee River where he became known as "the father of Monroe". Payne Arkansas Post Office was established at this location on July 5th 1861 under postal regulation No 3154 which stated: "George Washington Payne will establish an Arkansas Post Office at this place...He has offered security for $500 money." This post office operated until 1898 when it changed its name to Bentonville Post Office due to competition from nearby Arkansas City Post Offices which were opened just five months earlier by George Waco Payne Sr.. For many years after that time there wasn't even a Bentonville between downtown or north side streets but only an open field leading into town limits! In 1911–1912 Alfred Prentice organized local farmers into agricultural societies which would develop into irrigation systems around the area later becoming central Drainage Districts such as those still active today called Grand Traverse Drainage District No 2 or simply Grand Traverse D district because it embraces all or most of west side Township including current day Oakland Park & Tipton Heights areasqv The Purchase Dam located just south off US 231 across Kawkaw Swamp drained by clear water stream flowing through forested valleys above Poverty Point Lake formed 1922 as part of Salmon Arm Flood Control Project authorized by Act 453 approved November 8th 1922 providing for dam construction taking 10 year…. Beginning about 1920 there were reports that White Russians had been living in our community since before WW I…. By 1933 Russian people had moved out leaving behind extensive cultural artifacts….. Most items removed during survey operation include stone building blocks found scattered throughout community., curiosities such as pottery sherds,, lamps made from animal bone,, mirrors Madeira ware… Although some items have been reported back up again recently we have decided not pursue any further research on these materials given recent controversies surrounding Russia’s presence here., Local oral history reveals similar stories going back much longer…. A few examples include: A man named Ivanoff recalled telling his grandson about how he took goods away with him when he left Russia during World War II selling them back home…… In another story told by one individual who lived here during prohibition days recall seeing several men wearing1914 Detroit Tigers baseball caps while driving around town
Monroe was founded in 1805 by John C. Monroe, a fur trader and politician who served as the U.S. Minister to Great Britain from 1807-1813. The town rapidly grew during its early years, with a population of about 150 people in 1800 and over 1,000 by 1810. By 1830, the population had reached 3,000 and increased to 7,500 by 1840. However, the Panic of 1837 forced the closure of many factories and moved the population away from Monroe into other parts of Michigan. The town's popularity declined after that time and it disappeared from history until it was revived in the late 1960s when it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
