Monroe is a small town located in Macomb County, Michigan. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Monroe was laid out in 1837 by Nicholas Kelley, and named for James Monroe, the first U.S. president. The village developed a post office and store in 1839, and became a borough in 1849. In 1907, it became a city with a population of 442. The city was consolidated with other municipalities in 1967 and has since shrunk to its current size of 1,812 residents. Monroe is known as the "Gateway to the Great Lakes" because of its location on the navigable waterways that separate Canada from Michigan and Wisconsin. It also has significant historical significance because it played an important role during both the American Revolution and Civil War. One of the earliest settlers in Monroe was John Chapman who arrived there in 1836 with his family from New York City. He built a home near what is now Main Street and operated one of the first businesses in town- an apothecary shop that he started until 1840 when he moved to what is now Elmwood Avenue across from Central Park Cemetery where he built another home which still stands today. The Battle of Bojonegoro took place on September 25th, 1862 as part of the Union Army's effort to capture Fort Dearborn which served as strategic supply depot for General George Meade's army invading northern Illinois during winter months prior to his campaign against Confederate forces under Jubal Early that began December 15th nearby at Chicago Heights In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered all male citizens over 21 years old living within 10 miles (16 km) of Detroit along with their families into military service for two years or until they were returned home; this order applied equally to men born outside America but lived inside Michigan including those born within five years of US independence such as John Chapman who had been born on October 12th 1795 John Chapman's ancestor Major General Israel Putnam fought alongside General Andrew Jackson at Hocktuck Creek during operations leading up to Battle of Hocktuck Creek while serving as commander of Company K 3rd Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry
