The University of Notre Dame and Mount Carmel Abbey were founded in Mount Clemens in 1853. In 1898, the Citizens Action League organized a mass shooting to protest police brutality against black citizens living in Chicago. My father took me there to shoot some targets with old rifles that we had salvaged from World War II sites all over the Midwest. In 1808, the first white settlers arrived on the Michigan Peninsula. In 1812, a settlement was established at Mount Clemens by John Green and his partners. The village grew slowly until it exploded in population in 1821 when Nathan Silliman bought land from John Green. The town of Mount Clemens quickly became a popular tourist destination with its natural resources and scenic views. The townsfolk built a series of forts to protect themselves from Native Americans, as well as a school and post office. In 1840, the village had about 500 residents and was looking for ways to expand. A group of men led by Captain David Denny founded the city of Detroit in 1847. However, because of competition from Mount Clemens, Detroit only grew marginally until it reached its maximum size in 1850. In 1860, following Andrew Johnson's victory in the Ulysses S Grant-led American Civil War, MtClemens became part of newly designated Michigan Territory under President Abraham Lincoln. After being annexed into Michiganders First County in 1870, MtClemens experienced rapid growth with new businesses opening up including paper mills and breweries that helped contribute to its nickname "the brewing capital of Michigan." By 1910, there were over 10 thousand residents living in what is now MtClemens Township (and adjacent portions of Oakland County). Although someletal evidence remains from early days such as an old millstone still found on Main Street today (circa 1830), most aspects dating back to 1800 are gone or have been greatly changed by time and development within the township itself - which has seen an influx of both Chinese immigrants during World War II while also becoming home to numerous professional athletes over the years (e.g., NHL players Pavel Bure & Gordie Howe; Huron College football player Jeff Saturday; US Open tennis champion Maria Sharapova).
