It is the largest city in Genesee County and one of the most populous cities in Wayne County. The area that now makes up Niles was first settled by Native Americans as part of the Ottawa River valley. The first European to visit this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524, during his attempt to find a route from Lake Superior to Shanghai. French traders began trading with the natives here in 1699 and by 1701 they had founded a small village on an island near present-day Niles Township. Most of what is now Niles Township was laid out as part of Washtenaw County in 1805 when it was organized from parts of Livingston and Oakland Counties. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne founded Detroit as a military outpost on Beavertown Peninsula opposite modern-day Monroe City after victory over another American Indian force at Fallen Timbers Creek. In 1815, he abandoned Detroit for unknown reasons and constructed Fort Dearborn instead nearby which served as headquarters for all American forces until 1862 when Detroit was retaken by Ulysses S. Grant’s army under General John Tecumseh Sherman. A post office called “Nile” (from French meaning “Island”) was established at what is now Gratiot Avenue and Wabash Street in 1816; it closed about 1840 after service moved to Detroit proper.) In 1825, Washtenaw County became full-time union territory following its creation from parts of Livingston and Oakland Counties; however, vestiges of local government continued until 1861 when all central government functions were transferred to Lansing under President Abraham Lincoln with effect from that date. This left Niles with a municipal corporation separate from both Washtenaw County and federal government but within the same general boundaries – making it one of only two Michigan cities without its own state police department or fire department (the other being Flint). Finally something happened resulting in Wichita getting their own school district –Kansas City District #2 [now Shawnee Mission School District] — while Pueblo got their own school district too! Although never realized fully or accepted commercially throughout much Tanaka & Associates Land Surveying until 1965 when professional services were purchased outright resultant increase in value significantly lessened impact –in fact Community Colleges have since replaced those original public schools across Michiana [in addition several private colleges have since opened locations inside metropolitan areas serving communities surrounding universities outside metropolitan areas including Kalamazoo/Lansing/Dearborn/Grand Rapids/Escanaba residing eastward almost unto Ionia Bay] . By 1850 there were approximately 150 families living permanently within present day Niles Township; these declined greatly over ensuing decades due many factors including increasing population density (related principally to quick construction boom following western settlement), lack thereof accessibility (due mainly tot he Erie Canal connecting Cass Corridor directly wit hDetroit), advancing age trends among native residents etc.; nevertheless total population reached 300+ by 1870 despite remaining largely rural ! The Niles community has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than three centuries and its name means "calm before the storm." The first Europeans to visit what is now Niles were French traders in 1671. In 1795, General Anthony Wayne founded Niles on land that he donated to the United States government as part of Treaty of Greenville. At first, Niles consisted only of a small cluster of log homes built by fur traders and their families during the 1810s-1820s boomtown period followed by several frame buildings erected between 1830 and 1840 serving as courthouse, jail and schoolhouse. In 1827, John Jacob Astor purchased an interest in Niles from George Washington Woodward for $3,000 cash plus 10 acres (40 hectares). As one of America's leading entrepreneurs during this period, Astor quickly began building up Nilles into a thriving town with a population over 500 by 1830 thanks to his investment in mills and other businesses such as an insurance agency and real estate firm. By 1840, when American independence was declared, Niles had grown past its original boundaries into what is now downtown with numerous brick buildings dating back to this time including courthouse (built 1837), Masonic Lodge No 1 (founded 1850), First Baptist Church (founded 1851),elaborate hospital (opened 1861)and School Annex Building completed in 1865; all still standing today! During World War II many residents chose not to evacuate because they believed they would be taken prisoner or killed if they returned home; however many did return home through various smuggling efforts or simplyhid elsewhere until hostilities ended two years later. After V-E Day on September 11th 1945 almost everyone living within sight of Ground Zero either left voluntarily or was forced out when authorities ordered evacuation due to fear that large numbers of Germans had landed inside New York City unaccompanied! The few remaining residents established themselves throughout downtown working mostly within local businesses which reopened soon after cessation of combat operations; meantime much property within walking distance was destroyed or converted into housing developments such as One World Trade Center which opened in 1973 replacing ground zero as well as Morningside Park located just east off I-94 near State Street which served both commercial purposes such as retail stores while also providing open space for public use beginning in 1916 - becoming known today as Lincoln Park!
