Oak Park, Michigan is home to one of the oldest scopes in the world, dating back to 1814. The first scopes were built by Captain John Wood and his son John Wood Jr. in what is now known as the Old Village section of Oak Park. The first scopes used a combination of telescopes and eyepieces that allowed users to view objects up close. By 1830, some wealthy individuals had started purchasing new telescopes and began using them to study stars and planets. Soon, people in Oak Park were able to see things that they could not have seen with earlier types of telescopes. In 1876, a group of men from Illinois founded the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in Chicago which led to the creation of astronomy departments at many universities across America. In Oak Park, this led to the founding of the Observatory on State Street in 1879. This was one of the earliest observatories in America and was used for research into astronomy as well as general education for citizens. Oak Park is a small city in the northwestern corner of Michigan. The population was 47,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart Township and Mifflin County. The name "Oak Park" is from two different towns inMichigan- Oak Forest and Orchard Heights. The area that became today's Oak Park was first settled by German immigrants in 1835. They named their new settlement after a grove of oak trees on their farmstead near what is now Midland Boulevard and Ottawa Street. By 1845, however, most of the settlers had moved away, leaving behind a small community of about 100 people who built log cabin homes on land they purchased from David Denny for $1 per acre (0.50 sq mi). In 1853, John Witherspoon bought some additional land around this original settlement and named it Oak Forest after his home town in Ontario Province, Canada. By 1865, when he sold his holdings to General David Dixon as part of the purchase of Fort Wayne River Line, all but 10 residents had left for good or been driven out by Indian hostilities. Most likely because of this displacement, little remains from these early days except for a handful of old retaining walls and foundations still standing around various properties today including Midland Boulevard and Ottawa Street

Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and it is the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 109,651 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oak Park were French fur traders in 1697–98, and they named it " la Prairie du Nord" because of its location at the north end of what is now Detroit Township. The first permanent settler in what became Oak Park was David Sibley (1790-1848), who bought land from Nicholas Lacock for $1,000 in 1807. He founded a log cabin on his farm about two miles northeast of present day downtown Oak Park on an Allegheny River tributary called Beaver Creek. In 1821, Sibley married Anna Wright (1784-1850). They raised six children: David, John C., Robert W., Anna M., Clara P., and Sarah A.. In 1827, Jens Jensen purchased land from Sibley and began erecting a sawmill at his mill dam which would later be known as Pioneer Mill Pond.. In 1830, Augustus Woodward moved to Michigan Territory and established himself as one of the first farmers in what became Oakland County. He also built a home on East Grand Boulevard near today's corner of Gratiot Avenue and Cass Avenue N.. Woodward served as Sheriff (1830-34) and Alderman (1835-41) for District 2 in Oakland County; he also served as President pro tem (1901-02) during impeachment proceedings against William McKinley sitting on the United States Senate Judiciary Committee.. Augustus Woodward donated much land toOak Park which still includes parts of town center today including both Maple Hall Road SW (west side) and Old Main Road NW corner parking lots east side Maple Hall Road SW map . In 1847, Herman Muller settled near where Pioneer Mill Pond currently stands after traveling through Canada with his family on their way to America looking for lands that could be claimed by US citizens due to Land Act Of 1785 which led to British North America becoming part of US via Treaty Of Utica. Muller soon erected a large frame mill with sails turned by hand using flatboats converted into rafts pushed upstream by men rowing until they reached higher water levels where they stopped and caught fire creating a Preserved Engineering curiosity located just east off Fenton Rd between Pioneer Mill pond & Thornbrugh Rd
Oak Park was founded in 1834 by John and Anna Oak. The original home of the Oak Park Hotel, now a museum, was built in 1837. In 1857, the town became a county seat with the creation of Michigan County. The first courthouse was built in 1860 and served as the county seat until it burned down in 1903. The current courthouse was completed in 1984.
