Pontiac is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 30,752 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is the county seat of Muskegon County. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first white settler in what would become Pontiac was John Denton in 1827. He named his land "Denton Township," but it became known as "Pontiac" after General James Krieger's attack on Fort Dearborn on July 16, 1812 (the Battle of Ford) which resulted in the capture and death of Krieger's entire command. Krieger's army had retreated through what is now Pontiac just prior to this battle and so when he heard about the fort's defenders being "...in a posture for defense only," he ordered all his men to pound them into submission with their swords before turning around and marching back home to Chicago with their booty. The townspeople renamed themselves "Pontiacs" until they could get an official name from the government. The first school in Pontiac was built on present day Washington Street by Clements Academy trustees George Wetherington and Ebenezer Higginbotham in 1829-30; it burned down soon after due to lack of funding. A new school building was built on Third Street between Washington and Michigan Avenues in 1835-36 by Mrs. Elisha Beall (1806-81), widow of Captain Beall who fought at Buena Vista during the Mexican–American War, using her own money raised from local taxation for that purpose Settlers began arriving by water beginning in 1837 when the first steamer called SS Potomac arrived from Cincinnati loaded with passengers bound for Port Huron, Michigan Territory (now Traverse City). By 1840, there were six steamboats running between Fort Wayne and Pontiac carrying goods, passengers and refugees coming overland from Canada or via Lake Superior Passenger traffic grew rapidly during both world wars; especially during World War II because munitions production increasedalongside military installations nearby . In 1945, fourteen thousand people lived within five miles of downtown Pontiac while seventeen thousand more lived within one mile outside its boundaries; today only four thousand people call downtown their home .
