Port Huron, Michigan is known for its Ports of Call and its shipbuilding industry. The city has been a center for the boating and fishing industries for centuries, and today it enjoys a thriving maritime economy. In 1909, the United States Coast Guard erected a temporary pier in Port Huron to improve access to the harbor. This was followed by the erection of permanent piers in 1914 and 1922. The first commercial US Navy vessel to visit Port Huron was USS Pascagoula in 1918. As America's paramount seaport on Great Lakes, Port Huron played an important role in buoying American maritime trade during World War II. Today, the city remains a major port destination with both passenger and freight traffic totaling over $1 billion annually.

In 1836, the Michigan legislature enacted a law allowing for the construction of a railroad through Port Huron. The company that built the railroad, Northern Railway Company, desired to open up the area for farming and industrial development. They enlisted the help of George Stephenson, who was then working on his own railway in England. He recommended that Port Huron be chosen as one of the stations on the line. The city fathers agreed and soon after citizens began building homes and businesses in what is now downtown Port Huron. The city's rapid growth led to problems with pollution and traffic congestion. In 1907, a new bridge was built over the Detroit River to connect downtown with Midtown Detroit. This made it possible for more people to live in downtown Port Huron and created new business opportunities. In 1912, another bridge was built over I-94 connecting Downtown with Midtown Lansingburgh. This made it possible for more people to commute into Metro Detroit each day. Since then, downtownPortHuron has undergone several changes including becoming an entertainment district known for its nightlife; being used as a staging ground for large events such as music festivals; and becoming home to many high-end restaurants and stores
Port Huron, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 206,792 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Michigan and the third-largest city in Wayne County. The city is on both banks of Michigans Straits between Detroit and Windsor, making it a key transportation hub for both cities. It lies within the Saginaw Valley region of upper Michigan and is bordered by Ottawa County to its east, Macomb County to its west, and Oakland County to its south. The port town was founded by General Lewis Cass in 1807 as an outpost on Grand River with a population of 542 people. In 1814, when Congress passed An act establishing a new district within what is now Metro Detroit called Upper Canada District (now Ann Arbor), Cass appointed Port Huron's first Mayor John McLaren to manage development there as part of that area's growth. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s thanks to shipping activity along the Great Lakes and their connecting waterways; cotton production also became important early on due to swampy land near river mouths providing good soil for growing crops but low water levels preventing ship traffic from reaching shorelines ashore. By 1830, Port Huron had nearly 10,000 residents and two brick piers were built downtown: one for storage vessels and one for loading goods onto steamboats before being taken down in 1840 following completion of larger piers overripe at nearby Mackinac Island. Port Huron is a city on the Michigan Peninsula in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 20,955 at the 2010 census, up from 18,711 in 2000. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area and is included within the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Combined Statistical Area. The history of Port Huron begins with Native American trade and travel to and from Lake Superior for items such as fur, fish, and timber. As early as 1800, settlers arrived in what is now Port Huron from various parts of Canada and America looking for land to settle. In 1807, John Dickey founded a trading post on Saginaw Bay called "Dickey's Landing." By 1830, there were over 100 vessels carrying goods through Saginaw Strait daily between Detroit and ports on both shores of Lakes Superior and Huron. In 1825, Congress authorized an act to build a road across Michigan which would connect Washtenaw County with Allegany County (now Muskegon Heights). Work began on this road in 1830 but never ended due to lack of funding or interest from those behind it. The first portion of the present-day Interstate M-1 was built concurrent with this road in 1934; however much work still needed to be done before it could be open to traffic! On July 4th, 1836 Governor Thomas Ewing issued Executive Order No. 1 authorizing construction by private individuals of a canal connecting Chicago River with Lake Erie through northeastern Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—an order that produced more than $5 million ($ when measured against current prices) in profits over 10 years alone. After years of planning by many people including Augustus Woodward Beecher who became governor upon its passage into law, engineering work began on November 3rd 1840 and completed just two years later on December 15th.* At 5 miles long (8 km), only 2/3rds finished due to financial difficulties encountered along the way including massive groundwater depletion caused by navigation logs cut down during construction!* In 1846 Gov Beecher named his son Augustus Woodward Beecher Jr., Governor after his father’s success in getting Statehood for Upper Michigan - one step forward for everyone! With profits generated from canal construction continuing unabated until about 1850*, many new homes were built throughout downtown Port Huron despite attempts by speculators at turning what had once been an agricultural town into something resembling Detroit!
