Port Huron is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Isabella County. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities on the Great Lakes region, and has been called "the economic engine of Northwestern Michigan." The city's history dates back to 1809 when it was founded as a trading post by Peter Pettit and John Ladd on the Kawkawa River by means of a ferry crossing from Saginaw Bay. The first settler in Port Huron was George Hinton who arrived in 1810 with his family from Nova Scotia. He built a small log cabin north of what is now downtown Port Huron on what is now Spring Street. The first store opened in 1811, and early settlers traded goods with other communities along Lake Superior including Skaneateles, Grand Island, Battle Creek, Detroit, Marquetteville and Mackinac City. By 1830 there were over 20 stores located in downtown port huron with an estimated population of 300-400 people. In 1837, James Kossuth erected a tower to mark the site where he would later become president of Michigan Territory after becoming dissatisfied with being elected as governor of Illinois under then-President Andrew Johnson because he felt that Johnson had not given him fair treatment during their election campaign that year. At first it only served as a landmark but soon became known as "Kossuth Tower" due to its importance locally within local politics at that time. In 1840, Kossuth again tried to establish himself politically outside of Illinois by running for governor against incumbent Lewis Cass; however he lost because many people saw him as too independent for office inside Illinois while also being much younger than Cass which made him more vulnerable to attack from career politicians inside or outside his own state government option ( see also: political parties in America ). During this time period new businesses began opening throughout downtown port Huron such as The Grosse Pointe Shoe Company (founded in 1841), Harvester Factory (founded 1850), Belle Isle Lighthouse (opened 1861), Cannery Row Brewery (opened 1865) and Masonic Temple No 4 (opened 1888). Downtown business owners quickly realized that they could draw traffic away from larger urban areas such as Saginaw downriver due to higher tariffs levied on manufactured goods imported intoachine from abroad via Lake Superior during this era which limited trade opportunities between those regions especially since exports generally outpaced imports leading to increased manufacturing costs versus imports costing less money per unit soldiene . In 1870s another important development took place when General Electric became interested in developing land south of town eastside along Big Four Road due to its potential for electric generation following previous explorations around this area led by Samuel Morse through his company Western Union Telegraph Company starting about this same time period some 100 miles northeast cornering what is now Port Huron Harbor just south of Big Four Road near today's Ashtabula County line . This area eventually became known as GE Townsite along with other associated businesses like Phelps Dodge Workshops(now part Of Lockheed Martin Corporation) across Big Four Road starting about 1900 until major redevelopment efforts started occurring around 1960s spearheaded by Mayor Harry Comstock who came up with the idea for downtown port huron proper taking shape circa 1925-1930s dubbed "The Golden Age" while others continued redeveloping surrounding neighborhoods like today's Farmers Market District adjacent riverfront where current day skyscrapers are located
The current city of Port Huron was founded in 1839 as Fort Gratiot. It was named after General Wayne's victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1813. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its position on the Western Michigan Railway, which made it a hub for industry. In 1907, the city lost its status as a municipality when it became part of Grand Rapids.
