The following year, he created Hastings Township within Portage County effective January 1st, 1837; Hastings Township included much of what is today downtown Portage before it was annexed by Dearborn Heights on July 1st, 1937. On October 25th, 1850 United States troops under General Winfield Scott burned down four Indian villages including one located near present-day I-75/94 exit 169A westbound on Rt 482 (now known as Riverside Rd.). This event became famous as the Battle of Hixton Station which followed three days later when United States forces charged into the village with artillery fire only to be repulsed with heavy loss by Chief Tecumseh's warriors who used hand grenades to destroy most of American morale throughout both actions Two years earlier on November 15th 1849 a group led by Captain John Biddle destroyed two brick buildings at present-day White Cloud Rd./I-75 exit 171A eastbound on US 12 about northeast of modern day Northport; this event became known as "Biddle's Brick House". The building still stands today as part of Grosse Pointe Park & Museum complex off I-75/94 Exit 169B northwest near Grosse Pointe East High School

Portage, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 1,651 at the 2000 census. It is located about 17 miles north of Grand Rapids and 55 miles south of Detroit on I-75. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Portage County were French traders in the early 18th century. They named their settlement after General George Rogers Clark's expedition that explored the area in 1788-89. By 1800, there were only four residents living in what is now Portage Township: John Grant, Isaac Niles, Josiah Hildebrandt, and John Morse. In 1824, a group of farmers from Battle Creek formed a village called Bellefontaine near present day Kalamazoo for sheep herding purposes only. The first store opened here in 1830 by Jacob Hecker and his brother Solomon Hecker Jr.. In 1835, James Kapp bought land east of Bellefontaine for $1 per acre from local farmer Moses Eaton. Kapp built a log cabin as his home and started trading goods with other settlers along the Ottawa River. In 1840 he married Jennie Hutchison and they started an agricultural business producing cornmeal, flour, butter and cheese. They also raised horses and cattle until 1865 when they moved their operation to Kilgore where they continued to operate until 1975 when it merged into Kellogg Company parent company Unilever Limited (now owned by PepsiCo). In 1855 the portage road was built between Port Huron and Marquette through present day Alger Township which led directly to Stroudsburg because transportation then came via sailboats or wagons overland from Lima or Sault Ste Marie on Lake Superior (this still occurs today as part ofnr Big Rapids–Holland Road). The original route followed modern day US-12 south downriver past present day Delta Junction before turning east past present day Plymouth then following modern day US-2 northeast past White Cloud before rejoining US 12 at Alger Junction northwest of town today known as Snelling Avenue. Today's Missaukee Boulevard follows this same route but bypasses downtown Alger Township entirely while continuing northeasterly through current Notpen township continuing all the way to Holland Landing where it joins US 12 near its mouth today just west of Ashtabula County line! This short portage road was one means by which travelers could get access to different parts of Lower Michigan without having to journey downriver all the way to Grand Rapids or Lansing! It also allowedMiller Brothers Cheese factories located along either side of the river bank bordering Onward Manufacturing Company operated by Samuel Miller & Sons - these factories produced millions of dollars worth cheese during those years!
In 1827, a group of farmers led by John Goodrich founded the village of Portage on the east side of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The village was named in honor of General George Washington, who had earlier explored and fought in that area. The first settler in Portage was James Ritchie, who arrived in 1828. The town gradually grew as settlement increased along the lower peninsula, and by 1851 it had a population of 220 people. In 1861, a post office was established at Portage, and within five years it had become an important stop on stagecoaches traveling between Detroit and Grand Rapids. In 1871, when the United States went to war with Mexico, Portage became one of the principal military bases for American forces on the peninsula. As hostilities intensified and resources were scarce, many residents moved away fromPortage during World War I. After hostilities ended in 1918, many new residents returned toPortage over time. The town experienced several natural disasters during its history: A severe storm destroyed most of the town’s infrastructure in 1886; a tornado touched down near Portage on October 3rd 1916; and a fire burned through much of downtownPortage on December 1st 1907).
