Riverview is a small village in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-Warren-Dearborn Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Riverview was founded by farmers in 1871 as a small community on the east bank of the Grand River near its confluence with the Menominee River. The original name for the town was "Algonquin". Riverview's first store and post office were both located on Main Street and operated from 1871 to 1887. A second store and post office opened in 1903 on the west side of town, serving residents until 1907 when it closed due to lack of business. According to village history, many early settlers prominent in local politics include George Wurster (1811-81), Andrew Wood (1847-1915), John Purdy (1849-1925), Hiram Wurster (1860-1935) and Harry Sargent (1900-1975). Reverend Amos Stroud served as pastor from 1886 to 1889. In 1916, Alanson Houghton donated land north of town for an elementary school which became known as Houghton Elementary School; this donation remains one of only two primary sources of funding for education in Village history. In 1923, New Holland Paper Company merged into American Paper Products Company; this company later amalgamated with other paper companies to form Jiffy Lube Paper Co., which still operates out of Riverview today. One significant event that occurred during these years was when Alanson Houghton donated $1,000 for new streetlights along Main Street between Richards Road and State Avenue in 1926; these lights remain operational today and are considered one of the earliest examples of LED lighting technology in America. In 1951, Village voters approved a resolution authorizing use tax dollars for new Comprehensive Highway Maintenance Project within their boundaries; this project ultimately created the present day Park District boundaries around riverfront property adjacent to Ionia Lakefront Resort which now includes much more than just river view properties! In 1978, Village voters passed a resolution approving annexation by neighboring Warren Township due to their growing population density; this annexation has since become official! A major milestone during this time frame came when Ionia Radio Corporation leased space from Jiffy Lube Paper Co.; This facility allowedriverview residents access to programming such as "The Glenn Miller Show" beginning airing on October 3rd 1952 live from Ionia Radio Corporation studios! Unfortunately due to low ratings throughout most episodes over ensuing years production ceased after only 4 seasons :( . 1972 saw another big milestone when RCA Victor began distributing records & tapes through its subsidiary Capitol Records subsidiaryations including Columbia Broadcasting System - makingriverview their first ever satellite television station KVIL Bay View simulcasting Viacom's cartoons!) Finally starting 1977 all good things must come To an end...the last episode aired November 25th 1977......Although we would love nothing more than keep our beautiful town alive thru additional programming please know that we will haveTo move forward without those amazing productions!!!
