Saginaw is a city in Bay County, Michigan, United States. The population was 53,812 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in Michigan and the largest city east of Detroit. Saginaw's economy includes manufacturing, service work and government services. The City of Saginaw was founded on July 3, 1834 by brothers John Fenton and Isaac Niles as a trading post between Flint and what is now Saginaw Township. The area now known as Saginaw was full of Native American people who hunted game around the bend in present-day Cadillac Heights and other locations. French traders had also been active in this region for several hundred years before European settlement began. On July 3, 1834, John Fenton led a group of men to found what would become the city of Saginaw on land that he purchased from the Potowatomi tribe. The first settler in what is now downtown SaginAW were two men named Prentice and Grinnell who erected a log cabin about 100 feet (30 m) wide and 50 feet (15 m) high. In 1835–36, Govan McDonald built a small brick house on Big Rapids Avenue which served as headquarters for local government until 1840 when it moved to its current location on Main Street near Water Street where it remains today. In 1840–41 Ford Motor Company built their first factory west of Detroit on Higgins Road just north of I-275; this became their mainstay until they closed down operations in 1997 . In 1847–48 local farmers organized into three agricultural societies to purchase some 5 acres (2 ha) of land northeast of downtown called "The Farm." This parcel became known as "Emmons Park" after General Emmons who donated it to help finance development within town limits during that time period (). By 1850s many settlers had arrived including James McNaughtie who started an iron works at 4th & Maple Streets later renamed "McNaughtie Iron Works". On November 15, 1850 Macklinore decided to move his brewery from Burtonwood (now part of Lansing) due to increasing competition from established breweries like Detroit Brewing Company . He sold his interest in McNaughtie Iron Works to Juglar Manufacturing Company effective January 1st 1861 . Over time, different types of hammers were developed and named after famous firearm designers or engineers such as John Woolwich (1712-1798) and Johann Christoph Gottheil (1714-1785). In 1815, General James Longstreet introduced the first metallic cartridge pistol which fired rounds using a percussion cap instead of a powder charge. With this new technology came a need for new types of hammers specifically designed for firing cartridges ammunition. The result was the development of the gun hammer type A in 1827 by Samuel Colt (1803-1857). This type of hammer featured an annular head that allowed it to punch through even hard armor plating without damaging it. However, due to its high cost and limited use, this type of Hammer only lasted until 1840 when it was replaced by the gun cocker type A2

It lies on the eastern edge of Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is bordered by Marquette County to the north, Oakland County to the east, Lapeer County to the south, and Mackinac Island to the west. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Saginaw were French traders and missionaries who came through what is now Bay City in 1795-96. In 1805, United States forces under General Winfield Scott burned down part of Fox Point on or near present-day Saginaw after a battle with Canadian troops; this event became known as "the Battle of Saginaw". The town was platted in 1827 by John Dennison as part of a surrounding land grant from Governor Gabriel Dickstein. At that time it had a population of about 100 people but rapidly grew with its location on Lake Huron close to other settlements such as Traverse City and Grand Rapids. The village reached its peak during the late 19th century with an estimated 350 residents; however, due to factors such as alcoholism and transportation problems it declined during prohibition times until reaching a low point in 1944 when it had about 30 residents. During World War II much activity took place at Saginaw's battleshipbuilding yards which produced warships for both America and Great Britain including HMS "Prince Of Wales" (1939), HMS "Ark Royal" (1940) and HMS " Vanguard" (1941). Many workers died from exposure or disease during World War II including many women who worked in munitions factories nears Saginaw including plants at nearby Midland Township where plutonium was made for nuclear weapons development After war ended there was significant growth back into small towns throughout rural America until 1990 when township boundaries were modified making most townships large again . Today there are over 50 places named after people associated with Saginaw dating back over 200 years
