It had a population of about 100 people and prospered until World War II when it declined rapidly due to its isolation from larger cities and industry; however, it has since recovered somewhat with recent annexations by other municipalities into Wayne County. South Lyon's rich cultural heritage can be found throughout its history including musichall theatres such as Third Avenue Theatre (later known as Majestic), State Theater (now known as Saginaw Valley State University), Masonic Temple (now known as First Methodist Church) and more recently Joe Louis Arena which opened on November 5th 2007

South Lyon is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by James Glidden and his family. South Lyon is known for its annual agricultural show, which takes place on the main square in downtown South Lyon every November. The first settler in what is now South Lyon was James Glidden, who came to the area in 1837 with his family. He erected a cabin on Oak Creek about two miles north of present-day South Lyon. In 1840, he sold land to Simon Griggs and John Fenton, who built the first frame house in what is now South Lyon. The town began as a small hamlet with just 10 people in 1845. By 1850, it had grown to a full town of 25 residents with a school and store. In 1861, it became an important county seat due to its location at the junction of three roads that led into Washtenaw County: US 12 from Detroit via Ann Arbor; Indian Mound Road from Lansing via superiority; and Canadian National Railroad from Detroit via Sheffield (now City of Highland Heights). In 1871, when Washtenaw County was organized into districts, South Lyon became part of District 2A under Macomb Township administrator George Wickersham (1828-1900). On January 1st 1870 - one year afterDistrict 2A was created - North Branch Township was established within District 2A and also took over responsibility for all matters pertaining to District 2A includingSouth Lyons affairs until such time as north branch township achieved self-government status within district IIIA on April 1st 1872 when south branch township attained this status as well On July 1st 1907 - Yankee Stadium's inaugural season - south Lyons saw its first professional football game when Plymouth Whittemore defeated Centralia 3-0 at Athletic Park . Prior to this game there were no organized sports events taking place within our city limits other than hunting or recreational activities sanctioned by individual landowners/ proprietors ..... However professional football would become firmly entrenched within our city boundaries soon thereafter thanks largely to severalMajor League Baseball teams that leased facility space inside Yankee Stadium during their regular season games .... And so commenced what has been commonly referred to as "the golden age" ofsouth lyons athletics... Additionally some notable members of this early team include future congressman Hulbert Willis (R)and future state supreme court justice Roger Bemis
