In 1835, Joseph Sibley founded Sibley & Company which became world-renowned for their production of Mutual Savings Banks - America's first nationalized bank - at what is now downtown Detroit. In 1847, United States Senator Daniel Webster moved from Rochester to Southfield to open his new headquarters on Main Street and become an expert on tariff reform while continuing his work on Capitol Hill in Washington D.'s Dupont Circle district! In 1850, Abraham Lincoln made his famous speech from Ford’s Theatre inside the old Woodward Building – across Woodward Avenue from where he would later be elected President! On October 24th, 1908 – just two months after becoming Mayor – John Fenton opened Northland Park Racetrack which served as America's first ever amusement park with amusements such as rides (later replaced by roller coasters), games (eastern roulette being pioneer game here), movies (El Dorado starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr.), concerts (TheGrand Ole Opry featuring Wurlitzer organ tunes) and more! On October 25th following that inaugural event more than three thousand people attended an agricultural fairgrounds picnic entertainment headlined by vaudeville comedian nickelodeon star Everett K presto pantomime act Harry Woods!. For many years Northland Park Racetrack operated municipally under name "Michigan Downs", then again changed hands multiple times before finally closing its doors permanently in 1984 due to lack of finances primarily due to competition from better funded amusement parks like Six Flags Over Michigan located just outside town limits!). In 1913 – less than two years after becoming Mayor Tom Weaver – City Council passed an ordinance establishing alleyways surrounding each block providing public squares for social events etc… resulting in construction on land bounded by Highways 10/11/12 & M-24 currently occupied by Founders Hallmarks mall!!! One stoplight northbound off I-94 leads directly into Founders Hallmarks!!! This phenomena can still be observed today on Woodward Avenue near Adams Road intersection!!!
On October 17, 1814, the first permanent American settlement in what is now Southfield was founded. The town was named after General John P. Gaines, who had led a brigade of soldiers against the British in the War of 1812.
