Southfield is a town in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 10,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first settler in what became Southfield was James Mapes, who arrived in 1814. He named his new land "Mapes Township." A post office called Southfield was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it closed on May 1, 1914. In 1873, local farmers formed the village of Southfield to serve as a commercial center for their corn and cattle farming areas around the town square. The village had a school and a Methodist church (later re-dedicated to Jesus Christ). In 1907, Southfield voters passed a referendum to create an incorporated city with its own police department and mayor. The city charter was approved on November 3 of that year. On December 15th of that year, Mayor John Haggerty announced that the city would be renamed SouthFIELD after Samuel Forney Fielding – one of its most notable citizens who helped spearheaded early automobile manufacturing in nearby Flint – because he felt the name represented all aspects of south suburban life more effectively than "Southgate". Forney Fielding Boulevard runs through downtown SouthFIELD; however it does not go into town proper but continues eastward as North Avenue which connects with I-75 just northeast of town limits before terminating at Farmington Hills Road outside of town boundaries once again).

The site of what is now Southfield was once part of the village of Midland which was established in 1798 and later became part of Battle Creek Township. In 1814, John D'Arcy founded what is now Midland after he surveyed the area for a new town to be built on the site of present-day Midland. The new settlement began as a small community called "Newburgh" and quickly grew into an important center in the region due to its location near major water resources and its potential for growth. Newburgh's success led to other settlements being created around it and by 1829, there were over 20 villages located within Battle Creek Township alone. By 1830, Battle Creek had become one of the most important counties in Michigan due to its position as both a key transportation hub and because of its rich agricultural production. AsBattle Creek continued to grow, so too did Southfield; however, it would not become a major center until following World War II when industry started to arrive and suburbanization began to take hold across much of America
