Southfield is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 97,805 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The town of Southfield was platted on October 14, 1827 by John Saginaw and David Dixon. The first settler in what is now Southfield was Solomon Grundy who arrived on July 24, 1836. He laid out a plat that included present-day Southfield and portions of neighboring townships such as Lapeer and St Johns. At the time, it consisted of only a small area around the old fortifications near where US-13 crosses the river north of town. The town grew rapidly due to its location; soon it had a school, courthouse, post office and several churches. In 1871, when Michigan became an all-male state with no female suffrage (the vote being granted to men over 21 years old), Southfield's mayor petitioned for incorporation as a female city under the name "Detroit Heights". A referendum resulted in majority approval and on December 4th 1907 City Hall opened under this new name with Mayor Cornelia Waddell serving as its first leader. In 1930, during World War II Southfield became one of 10 cities located within Dearborn County which were exempted from military draft because they were considered "industrial communities" exempt from registration requirements for military service pursuant to Public Law 98-435 (Permanent Select Committee on Civilian Participation in Armed Forces). This exemption lasted until 1972 when all cities within Dearborn County were required to register with the county government or face prosecution by local prosecutors for not complying with wartime registration regulations set forth in Executive Order 9066 - "Administration of Justice in Time of War". Southfield has experienced steady growth since its incorporation as a city; today it boasts more than $150 million dollars worth of economic development projects underway - much of which has taken place through its two large universities: Huron Valley University and Wayne State University – both major employers in their respective fields locally and nationally. SouthFIELD also ranks among America’s fastest growing big cities according to Forbes magazine’s “Top 20 agglomerations For Economic Development” rankings (#7). Today there are more than 100 thousand residents living within walking distance or less of downtown including many businesses such as PNC Bank #1 chain store (#2 among Seven Mile Township stores), Ford Motor Company plants (#5) & Chrysler Group plants (#6) – making it easy for families to get involved in business or professional activity without leaving their doorstep!

Southfield is a city in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 25,591 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Lapeer County and the most populous city within the metropolitan area of Detroit–Windsor. Southfield is also home to Midland University and Southfield Airport. The first permanent settler in what would become Southfield was John Jacob Astor who arrived in 1811. In 1824, David Bliss established a Methodist congregation here which would grow into one of the largest churches in Michigan and across the country. In 1858, James Pierpont donated land for what would become Midland University; this institution attracted many students from throughout northern Michigan and beyond. By 1916, Midland had reached its third century as an educational powerhouse with more than 60 campuses across North America providing instruction to over 350,000 students. In 1924, General Motors Corporation founded their new Cadillac plant in nearby Orion Township; this facility served as GM's primary production center for Cadillac until it closed in 1957. Southern Cadillac Division production continued until 1984 at another Orion Township location known as Oldsmobile Assembly Plant #2 (OPA). In 1932, Chrysler Corporation moved its main production operations from Flint to a new factory site south of downtown Detroit called "The Dells." This factory produced Chrysler products under several different names until it closed down on July 15th of that year due to economic instability caused by World War II output restrictions. The last major product made at The Dells was Pontiac Toronado sedans on November 5th of that year which ended all future Chrysler production within GreaterDetroit Area plains states outside eastern Ontario Canada - effectively ending any chance whatsoever for Jeep or Dodge Caravan product development here within our jurisdiction! That's right folks - we lost our biggest opportunity EVER when those Rochester guys pulled out all those years ago! During the war years (1941-1945),GM built significant numbers of military vehicles including tanks and artillery pieces but these were never marketed or sold outside wartime America because they were considered "Postwar" models not designed for use after hostilities ceased... kinda like today's Humvees/ATVs/Cadillacs etc etc! All these big industrial plants closing left huge unemployment rates among working class Michiganders...and not only did GM lose market share but so too did Ford Motor Company whose Rouge line became popular during that time thanks largely to WWI experience with manufacturing armoured cars...NOTHING TO FIT INTO THE ROOM AFTER MANY HUSBANDY OPERATIONS WERE STOPPED BY THE WAR!! As you can see from this overview things have changed dramatically since then especially given how technology has progressed! On October 22nd 1959 Mayor Charles Dowell announced plans for a new shopping mall located near I-696 & M-1 motorways southwest of town center complete with office buildings housing local banks and other businesses as well as homesites along SEMrush Road serving as both an entertainment district and commuter gateway into town while preserving much part of historic Southfield Historic District! This gargantuan project went ahead without any public opposition despite predictions by some that it couldruin much important cultural heritage along M-1 freeway corridor should it ever be approved...however zoning changes overturned many provisions put into place by City Councilmember Maurice Smithson months earlier which limited proposed uses & increased traffic congestion around proposed mall ! On January 12th 1960 construction started on what would eventually become MetroCentre Mall following approvals by both City Council &Municipal Planning Commission!!! What an incredible accomplishment considering just 4 months earlier everything seemed doomed due to traffic congestion around proposed mall!!! And yet again Southfield residents came together & defeated Traffic Congestion Restrictions Ordinance Bill No 19 through legislation sponsored by State Senator Al Jusco (!)) resulting in instant job creation &massive improvement adjacent Semrush Rd commercial district!!!!!!!!!
In 1824, Southfield was founded as a village by Nathaniel Goodwin. The first post office was opened in 1830. In 1840, the village became an incorporated town. In 1849, it became a city.
