The area that now makes up Southfield was first settled by French and Indian traders in the 17th century. In 1836, Detroit businessman Andrew McNaught bought land east of the Rouge River and founded what is today Southfield. The city’s name comes from a Native American word meaning “place where the buffalo grazed.” The early firearms used by settlers in what is now Southfield were rudimentary affairs made from crude materials such as wood, stone, and metal. However, over time progress came to be made with improvements to weapons including cannons and rifles. By 1879, guns had become standard for self-defense in Michigan towns of less than 5,000 people. In 1865, gun manufacturers organized into two consors which became amalgamated into the National Rifle Association (NRA). It was through NRA efforts that pistols became available for purchase outside of militia groups during World War I. The NRA also created firearms regulation laws which helped make America one of the leading firearms countries on Earth during this time period. After World War II ended Congress passed legislation regulating firearm ownership and use making it an issue again which led to increased gun control measures being put into place after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut in 2012

Stephenson also founded the Detroit Arsenal to produce cannons and rifles for the military. In 1857, another man named Horace Greeley bought a revolver from Sibley. Greeley also started producing rifles and shotguns in Southfield. He called his company the "Greeley Rifle & Pistol Company." In 1861, when Michigan became part of the United States of America, handguns became illegal in Michigan. However, Revolvers continued to be produced in Southfield until 1865 when they were finally outlawed statewide by law enforcement officials at that time
Southfield is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 16,812 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Wayne County after Detroit and Cleveland. Southfield is also the largest city within commuting distance of Grand Rapids. The first settlement in what would later become Southfield was founded by David Dixon on July 3, 1824. Dixon named his new town after himself, David Sibley Dixon Township No. 2 in honor of General John Pemberton who had donated land to the township for development purposes. Dixon's original village included a school and five homes; it failed to gain favor with the community's founders and did not remain operational for long. However, earlier that year another group of pioneers had settled nearby on land that became united with Southfield as a result of an agreement between The People and George Stephenson and others from Detroit over what would become Woodward Avenue (now M-1). As settlers arrived in larger numbers in both villages, school districts were organized; however, Dixon’s village never regained favor among its neighbors for lack of space or other demands placed upon it by the larger municipality (the present day downtown area now includes much of what was once Dixon’s Village). In 1829 or 1830 an act was passed which provided for township organization without regard to individual settler applications (this act has been cited as one reason why there are few remaining buildings from either village except for some churches still standing today). This event helped lay the foundation for future growth when township boundaries were redrawn following “ consolidation” efforts during Utica Company times It should be noted that although there exists evidence that early residents of Southfield were familiar with Indian Wars activity occurring near their town limits – including firing off cannonballs into disputed territory – no such reports survive from this time period consistent with any hostilities taking place within present day Southfields borders In 1835 David Dixon sold 1/2 mile eastward along Woodward Avenue to Elisha Holmes which became known as Holmes Heights . On December 15th1835 heavy snowfall caused severe flooding throughout southwestern Brush Creek valley rendering many homes unoccupied but newly platted streets remained open due to inadequate drainage systems . Despite these challenges many people continued to live and work in brush country until springtime when water levels began receding enough allow access back into neighborhoods . Although most businesses closed during this time they reopened shortly thereafter due to increased traffic volumes brought on by resumed construction activities On October 3rd1837 James Kapp purchased 1/2 mile westward along Woodward Ave from Rufus Quesnay which became known as Kapp Hill ; this purchase marked the beginning of commercial development within present day southfields boundaries Kapp operated a tannery here until 1840 when he sold it operationally to John Haggerty who operated it until 1861 ; afterwards it reverted back into agricultural use until being converted into housing units around 1951 haggerty family descendants still use part of property northeast corner current 4481 Woodward Ave SE
