At that time this area included much of what is now south central Macomb County as well as territory east to Ionia Heights east of downtown Detroit including several villages including Hollandale (), Allendale (), Green Township () and Springwater (). In 1870 Hartman & Co., publishers of The Detroit News began publication here; it continued until its closure in 1972 In 1899 Southfield established itself as an industrial center with the arrival of American Engine Works which made engines and turbines for auto manufacturers such as Cadillac Motor Company and Packard automobiles The company employed over 1,500 people at its peak production near White Lake before closing down in 1957 . Other companies that arrived during this time include Mack Truck Corporation which built their first truck factory here in 1957; Amalgamated Edison Manufacturing Company established here to produce transformers for electricity deregulation; General Motors opened their Eastland Assembly Plant adjacent to RCA Victor Studios where many Chevrolet Corvettes were manufactured between 1958-1963; Notorious mobster Al Capone leased old GM plants including one across from town from Hereford Chevrolet just outside Southfield;; finally Ford opened their Rouge Landmark Factory adjacent to Wixom High School which produced models like Mustang GT350 coupes and Bronco pickups along with other vehicles
