Southgate, Michigan is a small town in the heart of Midwestern United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. Southgate is part of the Lansing–East Lansing, Michigan, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Southgate was first settled by Native Americans in the mid-19th century. After years of warfare and turmoil between various groups of natives and settlers, the area came under control of Detroit Township in 1836. In 1853, Southgate became a part of Oakland County when it was formed from parts of Wayne Township and Macomb Township. In 1876, Southgate was annexed by Lansing as part of an effort to create a new city Limits district to limit growth around East Lansing. The city limits were redrawn in 1895 again to match those of East Lansing proper after land north and east of Center Street had been taken away for development along with other areas south and west of Center Street. Southgate’s original downtown consisted only of a few buildings on Garry Road near the center where today’s State Capitol Building stands. On one side or “west end”of Town Square there were some stores and two churches while on the other side or “east end”of town square there were more buildings including several schools including one founded in 1889 that still stands today as Western High School – home to many local high school athletes (eighth team state championships in 2002). A number residents relocated from rural areas into what is now Southgate during World War II due to wartime shortages in food items such as gasoline which made traveling long distances very difficult so they could work Buick plants or other war-related factories located throughout Northern Michigan; many families also found housing within walking distance from their jobs at these plants sites (Wright Hite Homes being one example). Many people who lived here during WWII did not return until well into the late 1960s when new housing developments began popping up all overtown thanks largely to federal assistance programs like Veterans Administration Housing Development Program (VAHD) which provided financing for developers to build homes specifically for military veterans

In 1935, North America's first all-electric street light system was installed in South gate; this system replaced traditional hand-operated systems that had been used for years downtown in Washtenaw County In 1965, following passage of The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), which increased access to education for low-income students across America through government funding called " Title I", South Gate became one of only a few towns nationwide to receive Title I financial assistance under ESEA direct grant programmes administered by state governments In 2006, following significant economic decline throughout much of Michigan due to global recession and changes within Washtenaw County's political landscape including shrinking populations and mills closures over the last several decades which have impacted many rural communities within Washtenaw County specificallySouthGate experienced unprecedented growth with construction activity increasing 50%, retail occupancy increasing 25%, new jobs announced statewide with 70% being filled outside township boundaries As part of larger community effort dubbed "Township Growth Initiative" – which focused on developing comprehensive strategies for improving transportation options within township boundaries – Allendale Township officials collaborated with local leaders from South Gate during July 2013 dedication ceremonies for Allendale Township's newest intersection located just east of Route 24 near White Sands Lake - providing increased connectivity between two otherwise isolated municipalities - creating opportunities not only for businesses within both municipalities but also more residents visiting either municipality each day .
