Southgate is a small town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southgate's history dates back to 1810 when it was known as "Trenton." In that year, it was founded by Captain John Grosse and Dr. Peter Bemis on the banks of the Ottawa River. Trenton grew slowly until after World War I when automobile production began in nearby Detroit and demand for goods from south of the border increased. A new bridge over the Ottawa River connected Trenton with Detroit in 1929, making it an even more important town during this time period. As automotive production declined in later decades, Southgate gradually lost its commercial significance until development of Interstate 75 made it an ever-growing community once again (the only town within Wayne County to have this distinction). The first African American to live in Southgate was Alice Roberts who arrived there in 1913 from Eaton Rapids, Michigan. She worked as a maid for Mrs. George Sutherlin and eventually married him there. Her husband purchased a farm near present day Southgate Township and ran it for many years before selling it to white residents in 1951; however he continued to reside there until his death in 1990. Today many descendants continue to live near their farmssteads across from downtown where they visit during regular business hours or stay out during summer months when farmers are available for rides on their horses around their property fence line! In 1941, local resident Clarence Weems organized what would become known as Operation Overlord - a patriotic effort by local citizens throughout America to collect supplies needed by troops fighting in World War II while keeping morale high among civilians (). This event helped increase support for war efforts amongst locals and has been cited as oneof the most significant factors leading upto America's entry into World War II (). After World War II ended, jobs opened up throughout southwestern Michigan resultingin further growthof South Gate ().
