In 1907, Southgate was founded as a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population of Southgate grew rapidly during the early part of the 20th century and by 1930 it had reached over 10,000 residents. During World War II, Southgate became one of the most heavily bombed cities in America, with extensive damage done to both its infrastructure and homes. After the war, many local businesses closed or were relocated and the population decreased significantly. However, over time new businesses have opened up in Southgate and its economy has begun to grow again.
Southgate is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the south side of the Kawkawanna River. The population was 27,792 at the 2010 census. It is part of metropolitan Detroit area. Southgate is home to Midland Community College and nearby Stroudsburg University. The first permanent settler in what would become Southgate was John White in 1837. He built his log cabin on a bend in the Kawkawanna River, then an agricultural region which supported few people other than animal husbandry and fishing for whitefish and perch. In 1849, James Wilkinson purchased land from White and erected a frame house which he called "The Gables." Many years later, Farmer Mckenzie donated land east of town to build a larger schoolhouse with additions including two wings for classrooms, an auditorium/theater, kitchenette/diner, three garage entrances and one load-bearing addition for buildings used as a depot on the Wolverine Railway line between Grand Rapids and Detroit; these additions are now known as McKenzies Addition (north wing), Blackstocks Addition (south wing), Richardson Addion (west wing) and Whiteheads Addion (east wing). From this original schoolhouse until it burned down in 1913, various residents served as trustees or directors: Elisha Denny (1853–1924), Jno Wessels (1854–1929), Amos Lawrence (1857–1920), Solomon Northway McClure (1859–1927) Alpheus Swayne (1863–1945), Atherton Hatch Blanchard [Blanchard?], Geo Fenton [Fenton?](1865–1950)and Harry Beacham(1900-1981). Reverend Driggs served as interim superintendent during World War I while Rev vest Morningside School District No 1 constructed their new building on Gratiot Avenue north of town; that building remains standing today as Southgate High School Annexe. As early as 1874 when county commissioners met to consider platting out township boundaries along river frontage they were considering erecting stone marker cities such as Ann Arbor or Flint because then there were no townships within 10 miles of Southgate with enough people to settle them! After much discussion it was decided not to erect markers but rather have surveys done so that citizens could better understand their location & boundary lines! The first recorded survey took place September 8th 1875 by H R Sweitzer who surveyed all present day Southgate Township limits & included parts of West Bloomfield Township also!! That same year William Dixon platted out East Bloomfield Township which became our current Township name back up from where Surveys had been taken earlier!! On map wpg Map # 143 dated October 15th 1889 we can see lots newly platted adjacent to present day Southgate City Limits!! When Josephine Harding married Alfred Beall in 1870 she did so without knowing that her husband had bought 640 acres north of town from Josiah Beall four years earlier!! They moved into their new home just beyond what is now Park Road in 1871 followed by their two youngest children who lived with their grandmother until 1893 when they went live with father Alfred Beall Jr.–this created some tension because Alfred wanted access to his own resources even though his wife got most everything else!!!! When Alfred Jr died suddenly young age 20 his widow inherited 640 acres plus title thereto but couldn't live there due too many snakes living near her home!!!!! She sold off some acreage including most notably her house across from Park Road where she now resides….. lasted less than 5 years because snakes started coming back!!!!!!!! Some say she relocated because she didn't want anyone interestedin buying her land BACK UP FROM WHERE SHE SOLD IT TO HER DAUGHTER IN 1893……..many say she relocate becausethey found gold over there????????? We will never know for sure…..anyone know anything more definite???
