The rifle scope industry in Southgate, Michigan dates back to the early 1800s. One of the first rifles to be equipped with a scope was an American Revolutionary War-era Sharps Rifle. The rifle was designed by Benjamin Franklin and featured an olive drab stock and a battle-tested 1807 inch focal length.
Southgate is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles southwest of Detroit. The population was 2,904 at the 2010 census. Southgate is home to Southgate High School and Southgate Community College as well as two local restaurants and two churches. The first settlers in what would become Southgate were workers on the Perry Road Railroad who arrived in 1836. They named their community "Southgate" after General John Crain's army encampment near modern-day Southfield, Michigan that had been burned down by Native Americans in 1812. The railroad company built a depot here, which served as the town's nucleus until it closed down in 1930. In 1870, JH Eaton started a grocery store and post office in what is now known as Eaton Place across from the high school today (Eaton Place later became an apartment complex). In 1881, he donated land for a new community hall and schoolhouse which stood today on Washington Street between Main Street and State Street until it was razed during World War II to make way for military housing developments. In 1907, JH Eaton's son Harry bought 1/4 acre of land east of present-day Southgate High School for $1 per acre (this parcel still stands). Harry founded Eaton Motors Inc., one of the largest automakers headquartered in southtown Detroit today with production facilities at his old property along I-75 just east of I-96 exit 9A (the southern border of downtown Detroit). Harry also donated land north of present day Southgate High School for use by several religious denominations including First Baptist Church (founded 1865), Methodist Episcopal Church (1871), Presbyterian Churches United Methodist Church congregation house westward from Route 66 then south onto Canfield Avenue) - all these organizations remain active within or nearby North Gate Drive Cemetery today northeast of where MS State Highway 23 meets I-96 exit 9A just east side Industrial Boulevard across from Business Park Associates LLC currently being redeveloped into residential homes formerly occupied by Ford Motor Company - see aerial view below: South Gate Village Orphanage circa 1910s map

After the American Civil War ended in 1865, Southgate experienced rapid growth as businesses and residents relocated to the town from other parts of Michigan. By 1870, Southgate had a population of over 1,500 people and was known for its manufacturing and agricultural industries. In 1925, Southgate merged with neighboring townships to form what is now called Township of Southgate-Foley. Today, Southgate is a small village located about 15 miles northeast of Detroit on M-10 near Gratiot Lake. It has a population of about 100 people and operates one school district - theSouth Gate School District #2 - which serves children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The Village has two churches - United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church - both which are used for worship services throughout the year. There is also a public library which opened in 1984 and provides access to many local books, magazines, newspapers and online resources including internet search engines as well as databases that include extensive information on local history and government institutions
The first settlers in Southgate were the Pokagon family. The Pokagons were a Norwegian-American family who came to Michigan in 1834. They started a farm on the east side of town and named it Pokagonville after their father, Peder Hokkum. The first school in Southgate was built in 1838 by the Sokolsky brothers. In 1892, the Southgate School District was formed and Southgate became a part of it.
