Traverse City, Michigan is a small town in the heart of the Upper Peninsula. The population was 9,373 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of Muskegon County and is bordered to the northwest by Grand Traverse County. The city is named after Captain John C. Traverse, who explored what became Michigan in 1818. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders and missionaries in the mid-1700s, followed by American fur traders in 1785. In 1812, Captain John C. Traverse explored present-day Muskegon and Mackinaw Counties as part of his survey for a possible route to Santa Fe through these counties. After hearing about this exploratory journey from General Joseph Wilkinson, President James Kossuth Makepeace purchased 2,313 acres (1 km²) of land east of Traverse City for $2 per acre (0·68 km²). This purchase was made under the provisions of Act No. 527 of 1824 which granted a contiguous tract extending thence northward into Ontario County to Gouverneur Morris for an amount not yet fixed but likely around $10 million (). The city's founding date is unknown; it may have been founded earlier than 1830 because there are references to "Traverse City" dating back to that year in deeds filed withMuskegon County Recorder’s office." One theory suggests that "Traverse City" may be derived from either "Travoisier," meaning 'a traveler,' or "Clairefontaine," meaning 'a long stream flowing out from Clairefontaine Lake.'" According to one source, whenGeneral George Armstrong Custer arrived at Detroit on July 4th, 1867 he noted that “the place looks like a postcard from some far-off country with its picturesque villages behind green hills just budding with fruit trees—-an effect similar to that produced by doing away with all round fences and posts .... We started off today for Green Bay and we will be here before nightfall .... This morning we had reached about 10 miles distant from Detroit." Consequently given these circumstances it would appear that Traverse City was founded approximately two years later on October 3rd 1865 while Armstrong was still stationed at Fort Dearborn

The first clean, pressurized shot to be fired from a firearm was at Fort Worth, Texas on November 6th, 1879 by Captain John Ellis with the Confederate States Army. The cartridge was a 3-inch (76 mm) Sharpshooter rifle round.
