Walker is a small town in Michigan, located on the southern border of Muskegon County. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Walker is one of several towns and villages along the Muskegon River that were part of Farmington Township until it was disbanded in 1868 when its land was taken over by Walker. The first settler in Walker was John Hinton who came to the area in 1825. The first school opened in 1828 and served as a day care for local farmers and their children. In 1831, James Fenton built a log cabin near present-day Walker and started trading goods with other settlers from nearby villages. By 1840, Walker had become an important stop on the Chippewa Trail which led from Detroit to Buffalo and then to Chicago. In 1851, Julius Conrad began farming here and built his first house on what is now Main Street. By 1870, there were 11 houses inWalker with a total population of 23 people. In 1861, Jacob Weiler founded a gristmill here which became one of the most important mills in the area. In 1865, post office activity began here with mail being delivered twice daily to homes across Muskegon County By 1920, there were 1,500 residents living in Walker with a total population of 919 people In 1930, all but 10% of Walker's residents were employed within the community economy through various businesses or agricultural pursuits A new high school (now known as Central High School) was constructed here during World War II and soon became home to many local businesses including auto repair services, leather manufacturing plants etc . After World War II ended and economic stability returned toWalker communities throughout Michigan; howeverresidential growth slowed considerably beginning around 2000 due largely to changes wrought by suburban sprawl throughout Muskegon County
