In 1825, Colonel Arthur Storrs established Fort Dearborn at what would later become Walker Creek that served as a military post for the Michigan Territorial Army during the War of 1812 against Canada. In 1830, Colonel Storrs moved his garrison to Macomb Depot near Howell Lake in Allen County and renamed it Fort Dearborn after himself; thus beginning an era of continuous military presence in Walker which would continue until 1945 when Macomb Depot closed its doors following World War II due to budgetary reasons. In 1837, General James Hennepin explored much of upper Michigan before retreating back upriver to Mackinac Island after encountering Native Americans there who had knowledge about fur traders passing through their territory seeking land for themselves and their tribesmen - information that could have led to serious conflict if not resolved peacefully between white settlers and native people living within modern dayMichigan’s borders.
