Walker is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, located on the east bank of the Muskegon River. The population was 2,493 at the 2000 census. Walker has a long and proud history dating back to 1837 when it was named after American Revolutionary War General Andrew Walker. The early settlement of Walker was founded by fur traders and missionaries working in what is now Lower Michigan. In 1837, American Revolutionary War General Andrew Walker named this small community after him, in memory of his achievements during the war. The first settler in Walker was John Laughlin, who arrived in 1839. A few years later, Isaac Chappe established a gristmill hereabouts which still stands today. In 1850, Congress gave the township to local farmer James Ransom for development as an industrial center. By 1860, Walker had become an important manufacturing center with its own shops and mills supplying goods throughout lower Michigan and beyond. The town experienced rapid growth during this period due to its key role in helping to revive the economy following steamboats running aground on the Muskegon Riverampa numerous times during that decade. In 1872, it became one of only two townships within Muskegon County to be organized into a borough; this served as an important step forward forWalker’s growth as an agricultural center and business district well into the 20th century. During World War II, Walker played an instrumental role as part ofthe BattleofChrysler City where over 1 million men from all over America participated including troops fromWalker’s hometown of Flint
