Westland is a small town in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area. It has been located in that location for over 120 years. The first settler in what is now Westland was Levi Hicks, who arrived on horseback from Kentucky in 1836. In 1839, Indian chief Tecumseh and his forces attacked the town and killed 10 of Hicks' settlers; only one man, John Nicholson, was able to return home with help. The townsite was claimed by Detroit in 1846 but westward migration continued until the early 20th century when most of the population moved to Lansing or other large cities. The first post office was established at Westland on July 8, 1861. A store and hotel were built along East Main Street between 1863 and 1865, followed by a schoolhouse in 1865-1867. The present courthouse building was erected between 1909 and 1912 as part of a larger project to improve infrastructure around the town center. In 1916-1917, Westland became an incorporated village under the administration of Snyder County; it folded into rural Kent County (now Macomb) after that county lost its charter status following federalization of Michigan during World War I. However, some residents continue to identify with Westland as their ancestral home. In 1968-1969, local residents successfully campaigned for incorporation into city limits as part of a broader effort to increase services available to the community outside of agriculture land including health care and welfare services; this move increased business opportunities for the townspeople while reducing its dependence on agricultural production which had declining profits due to changing market conditions since World War II

In 1870, the town had a population of just over 100 people and became an important center for trade in the area. By 1930, Westland had a population of 2,000 people and was considered one of the most prosperous communities in Michigan. However, during World War II, the town saw heavy military activity and many residents were forced to leave their homes; by 1945, Westland had only about 150 residents left.During the post-war years, Westland experienced some growth but also several declines; in 1970 it had only about 50 people living there and by 2000 it had only 10 remaining residents. However, in recent years things have slowly begun to improve with the opening of new businesses and more residences being built within the township limits.
