In 1845-46, WILLIAM PARKER began operations as an ice cream parlor at 609 North Main Street which later became known as "The Parkers'.In1850-51 JAMES KENNEDY built a store at 515 North Main Street which became known as "Kennedy's".In 1855-56 JOHN McKINNEY began operations as an importer/distributor of goods from Canada by boat along Woodward Ave..He also started to build houses hereabouts.- During this time period two schools were established: The Western High School (now Central Michigan University) was founded in 1860; and The Eastern High School (now Midwestern State University) was founded in 1865.- By 1861 it had become apparent that there would be no more business growth within town limits so Kennedy sold all but one house & lot - adjoining territory becoming part of Upper Peninsula village of Whitefish then being organized under MIssouri General Assembly Plan No 7....After Kennedy died suddenly in 1863 leaving only $801 left over after paying off all his debts he sold most or all remaining properties excepting one house & lot back to their original owners...It should be noted that several other entrepreneurs followed JFK including MARTIN TAYLOR who built Taylor Manufacturing Co.; GEOFFREY PEARSON who operated Pickering Foundry; WILLIAM STRANGE who developedStrange Fruits Grocery; SAMUEL PEPPER whose pepper factory produced some million peppers per year until it went bankrupt during World War I; EMMALINE COOPER who ran Cooper Drug Store next door to her father Elijah Cooper’s grocery store before moving into her own store building still standing today...By 1870 there were 349 residents living within town limits... According to the 2006 American Community Survey conducted by United States Census Bureau, Westland has a total population of 24,736. Of these 21%, 28% are Hispanic or Latino origin while 23% are white alone
