Wixom is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 13,417 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Washtenaw County after Ann Arbor. Wixom was founded on February 20, 1881 by Isaac Norris and his brother Amos Norris. Wixom is named for George Washington Wixom, who had been an early settler in the area. The first gun oil in Michigan was prepared by Abram James Cook of Detroit in 1836. Cook's recipe used animal fat and pitch to lubricate handguns and cannons. The first commercially produced gun oil arrived from England in 1882 as "Gun Lubrication" by Alfred Nobel while he was working for Thoragundsen & Company Ltd., manufacturers of explosives and munitions products. In 1895 Alfred Nobel merged with Vickers Rubber Co., creating British Petroleum Corporation which bought Gun Lubrication from him that year. From 1902 until 1918 PEP (British Petroleum Exploration) Limited operated exploration camps near Flint and Saginaw on the now abandoned Dzialinskoye Mine surface where they obtained significant quantities of coal, gas, oil shale, uranium ore and other mineralsbesides gun lubricants including bitumen
