Woodhaven is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Montgomery County region of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming metropolitan area. Woodhaven is located on Detroit's east side and consists of 9 blocks of small homes built around a central square. The community was founded by farmers in 1892. In 1898, it became a station on the now defunct Wayne County Railway. In 1918, the town lost its post office and became an unincorporated village. The population grew modestly until World War II when it exploded with growth due to wartime production at Ford Motor Company's Rouge Plant and other factories in nearby Midland and Battle Creek campuses. The war created new jobs for locals and helped make Woodhaven one of the most popular communities in Michigan during that time period. After 1945, however, there has been little growth because many manufacturing plants closed or moved out while suburban development increased overall population levels in surrounding counties. Today, Woodhaven remains a vibrant community with active businesses and a strong sense of community involvement which has led to it becoming known as "the best place to live in Grand Rapids". Its close proximity to downtown makes it an ideal location for shopping (including several big box stores) as well as restaurants and entertainment options such as cinemas and theaters

The town of Woodhaven, Michigan was laid out in 1836 by Emigrant George Washington Mennonite. The town site was purchased from the Ottawa Indians by John P. Gaines in 1838. gaines named the town after himself, and it became an important center for Mennonite trade and worship. In 1841,gaines donated land to the town for a school and church. The first school building was built on what is now First Street in 1842-43. In 1870, wood Haven replaced Lansing as the capital of Michigan because Lansing had become too dilapidated and could not support its own population. In 1863, when the Union army burned Detroit, some Mennonites moved to Woodhaven to rebuild their community. They founded a new congregation calledOA Christ Church which still exists today. The church also served as city hall from 1865-1868; until that time, Lindenwold had been the capital of Michigan). Additionally, due to its location near Fort Wayne (then part of Indiana), Woodhaven grew quickly into a major manufacturing center for munitions during World War I. Many factories were located here such as Grendel Arms Company (now known as Huntington Arms), United Aircraft Factory (later renamed McDonnell Douglas), Willowbrook Arsenal & Tool Works, Canoga Park Arsenal Ammunition Plant and many more later on during World War II including Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corporation (GM) and Chrysler Corporation among others After World War II ended, much of the manufacturing capacity at these plants came down with technology transferring offshore or moving away altogether in order to avoid any possible nuclear accidents or wars internationally that might arise from this sort of thing happening again in our country’s future However despite this decline in activity over time there are still some remnants left today like United Aircraft Factory where they make small planes made mostly out of plastic materials but they do have one original plane inside still
Wright brothers opened the first store on East Wright Avenue in 1892. The store was closed in 1924, but reopened in 1927 as the first Black owned and operated business in town. In 1938, the store moved to its current location at 5th Street and Grand River Avenue. The store was purchased by J.C. Penney in 1961 and closed in 1977. It reopened as a Barnes & Noble bookstore after being vacant for several years. The Wright Brothers Museum is located adjacent to the store on Grand River Avenue
