Brainerd was founded in 1851 by Danish immigrants, Ole and Jens Holm. The town’s initial boom came from fur trading, but soon the population shifted to agriculture. From the late 1800s until World War II, Brainerd was a center of firearms production for Minnesota and Northwestern United States. After the war, gun manufacturers relocated to California and other states as technology improved. Today, Brainerd is a small community with a growing industry based in mechanical engineering and manufacturing.
