Cloquet is located on the eastern edge of the Chippewa National Forest and has a sawmill and an agricultural community. Cloquet's history dates back to 1857 when it was founded by Danish immigrants as a post office on the banks of Clearwater River. In 1907, Cloquet became a village when it merged with nearby Hibbing. In 1945, Cloquet incorporated as a city. The Cloquet Mills were built in 1915 by Horace Halsey and his son Edward Halsey to produce flour for local grocery stores in Minneapolis and St Paul. The mills closed in 1974 but are now preserved as a museum and public recreation area known as "Husey Park". The first settler in Cloquet was George Claxton, who arrived in 1857. He built a log cabin near present-day Cloquet and named it Claxtonville after his father. A post office was established at Claxtonville in 1861, and the community took its name from him. In 1875, Benjamin Sibley settled in Cloquet and built a sawmill on the Cloyne River. In 1896, a store and hotel were built in Cloquet by Hilda Jahnke; they remain serving as commercial buildings today. In 1902, Danish immigrant Ole Dahl started operating an ice cream truck from his home on Main Street; this truck remains parked outside Dahl's Business Center to this day. The first high school for students in Cloquet was opened in 1907; it became known as Park High School until 1969 when it changed its name to Cloquet Community High School. The last major development before World War II was the erection of aUttle dam across the Cloyne River by local farmer John Weiland to improve water supply for his farmsteads downstream; this dam remained standing until 2003 when it broke free from its foundation and completely destroyed downstream infrastructure including power lines and homes).
