Coon Rapids is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota and it is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The population was 3,695 at the 2000 census, making it the smallest city in Minnesota by population and also the second-smallest city in Minnesota after Rochester. The first gun barrel to be manufactured in Coon Rapids was a five inch diameter barrel made from a piece of hickory that had been cut into two pieces and glued together with binder wire. The barrel was first used for target practice by local farmers in 1892. In 1905, Eugene Schieffer started manufacturing guns at his business called “Eugene”s Guns & Ammunition store on Main Street. By 1901 there were ninety-nine residents total with forty businesses conducted out of seventy-six homes! A water tower was built soon after as part of a larger water system expansion project designed to serve all of rural Minnesota!
