The town was founded in 1887 by farmers from Iowa and Wisconsin who named it for coon (a wildcat) that had been seen near their place of settlement. The name stuck and the town slowly grew until it reached its current size in 1950. Coon Rapids has a mix of Norwegian, Swedish, German, Irish, Czechoslovakian and Danish immigrants who have contributed to its culture and economy. Today, Coon Rapids retains much of its pioneer spirit with active businesses such as a paper mill and an ice cream parlor being some of its most popular tourist attractions. There are also several golf courses located within walking distance of the town center which offer many activities for residents and tourists alike including fishing, hiking, skiing/snowboarding and baseball/softball leagues.

The first Post Office in Coon Rapids was established on December 5, 1855. In 1870, the city became a county seat of Dickinson County. In 1912, the City of Coon Rapids merged with neighboring Alexandria to form a new town called Cone Mills.
