Crystal was founded in 1879 by Danish immigrants Ole and Marie Rasmussen. They named their new settlement after a crystal that they had seen on an expedition to Dakota Territory in 1872. Crystal grew slowly until it reached its peak during the late 1920s when it had a population of 10,000 people. However, during World War II Crystal lost much of its population due to military service and then plummeting industry values left the town with just 2,500 residents by 1990. The township has made some small progress since then but remains below average for rural America. For example, only 9% of jobs in Crystal are paid above poverty level and property values have remained relatively low despite high growth rates over the past few decades. Despite these problems, there are some notable successes story such as the opening of a local music school in 2001 which has helped revive local economy and attract new businesses to townspeople; or the construction of a new library which opened in 2007 which has brought much needed tourism to Crystal while also helping to improve public health across the community

Crystal, Minnesota is a small town in the heart of the Dakota Territory. The territory was ceded to the United States in 1905 and it became part of Minnesota. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. Crystal is one of six towns within the Clearwater Township subdivision which is located in Rice County. The first settlers to come to Crystal were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1858. They founded a trading post on an island in what is now downtown Crystal. In 1865, two brothers named Lars and Ole Snively established a grocery store and post office there. In 1868, Finnish immigrants built a sawmill on east riverbank about one mile from downtown Crystal. From this mill, they produced lumber for construction projects throughoutMinnesota and eastern Wisconsin until World War II when production stopped because of wartime restrictions on wood resources. Crystal's most important development came during the late 1800s when entrepreneurs began opening stores and restaurants thereabouts along with other businesses like grain elevators and blacksmith shops catering to the growing population of farmers and ranchers west of Duluth. The town grew rapidly due to its location near railroads, lakes, mining operations,and other industrial sites as well as its easy access to public transportation Via streetcar and bus service
Crystal, Minnesota is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Crystal was platted on January 15, 1857 by Fergus McMillan and James Ewing from land acquired from the Archibalds of Stroudsburg in what is now Montgomery County. The name comes from the fact that there were no watercourses near it at that time. The first store in Crystal opened its doors on December 5, 1858. The town was incorporated on February 6, 1861 by act of the state legislature under the name of "Fergus McMillan's Colony." In 1865, crystal became an independent city and changed its name to "Crystal City". In 1912, Crystal had two banks; one operated as a check cashing business and another did general banking operations including loans and investments. That year also saw the opening of the first post office in Crystal City with A C Donnelley as its first ever clerk- typist/postmaster/envelope carrier. On October 1st 1913, Crystal merged with nearby Sauk Rapids forming what would become known as Sauk Rapids-Crystal merger which lasted until 1978 when Sauk Rapids withdrew from Hennepin County effective January 1st 1979 due to budget cuts (Sauk Rapids incorporation had not taken place then). On July 17th 1984 officers and citizens of Sauk Rapids gathered together to celebrate their 100th anniversary by erecting a large sign reading "SUK RAPIDS - 1914-1984" adjacent to the old courthouse lawn where crystals once stood side by side with sauk rapids!
