Elk River is a river in the US state of Minnesota. By 1915, many businesses had relocated to larger cities such as Minneapolis or Chicago because of cheap labor available in those cities during World War I. During World War II, Elk Rapids served as a major airfield for bomber groups based in Duluth; these groups used nearby Deer Lodge Air Force Base for storage and takeoff operations from their planes after takeoff from Elmendorf Regional Airport northwest of town. Australian prisoner-of-war camp located within easy reach by townspeople during World War II closed without warning on October 9th 1944 due to American bombing raids which destroyed much buildings within easy range including several hospitals which were providing medical care for American prisoners who had been captured by Japan while fighting against our allies (the Allies were then allied with Germany). Most inhabitants evacuated before any damage could be done but some took cover under homes or inside churches until order was finally restored again about an hour later when all bombs had stopped

There are also several businesses located in town that support local economy including restaurants, stores and an ice cream parlor/cafeteria combo called Cream puffs & More which has been open since 1951!
In 1868, the Elk River was first surveyed as a proposed route for the Minnesota Central Railroad. The railroad was never built and the land along the Elk River became an agricultural district. In 1912, the United States Forest Service created the National Wildlife refuge on what is now known as White Earth remembrance property off of Elk River. The refuge included over 1,000 acres of forested land that is home to a variety of wildlife including bears, deer, and ducks. In 1933, Congress designated part of White Earth remembrance property as Fish Hatchery Pond No. 5 in order to provide spawning habitat for migratory fish species in Michigan and Wisconsin. Today, this environmentally-sensitive area remains one of the most popular spots in White Earth County for birdwatching and fishing.
