In 1897, Fairmont voters passed a resolution asking the state legislature to annex it into Minneapolis; however, no action was taken until 1912 when residents petitioned again to become part of Minneapolis after their hometown saw its share of trouble during World War I. In 1925, Fairmont established its own school system when local parents donated land south of Interstate 94 for that purpose; today, both schools are operated by Metro Schools District No.-2 through Montgomery County public schools system%. During World War II, Fairmount produced crops such as wheat and corn for shipment to Europe; afterward many businesses closed or moved away as technology advanced and prices plummeted due to war rationing measures instituted by America's allies. About 1945-46 only 5% or so remained open after production ceased because most people could not get food stamps because they were too poor to produce anything other thanicago-grown vegetables home from work or from market stalls near their homes'. Most residents either left or were absorbed into adjacent neighborhoods within 10 years following prohibitionist measures introduced during post-war reconstruction efforts which redistributed resources among newly postwar communities without giving back former industry sites to their original occupants - something often called "the fairmount effect".
