Forest Lake is a small town in the heart of Minnesota’s Twin Cities metropolitan area. For over eighty years, Forest Lake has been an iconic community known for its gun protection history. The town was founded in 1881 by lumberjacks and farmers who agreed to erect a fence around their land to keep off game and other predators. Forest Lake is a community in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,521 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first European to visit Forest Lake was Pierre Teilhard de Chardin in 1853. In 1881, forest land belonging to Nicollet County was ceded to Ramsey County for a town site near present-day Forest Lake. The town's name came from nearby Clearwater Township which had been organized in 1868 and named for the body of water that drained into it from the woods at its eastern edge. In 1907, Forest Lake begansell operations as an agricultural fairgrounds with exhibits by farmers and their animals from across the state and country. The fairground continued operation until 1964 when it closed due to infrastructure problems and budget cuts within Ramsey County government. In 1978, ForestLake Properties Inc., a private real estate company based in Minneapolis, purchased the fairgrounds and continue operations as a theme park today known as "ForestLake". According to the 2000 Census there are 2,976 people living in or adjacent to Forest Lake who identify themselves as White (or non-Hispanic white), Black or African American (2%), Native American/Alaska Native (1%), Asian/Pacific Islander (1%), Hispanic or Latino (10%). 3% identify themselves as Mixed race or ethnicity; this number includes people who identify themselves as both white and black/african american

Forest Lake was named for a grove of trees in the area. The first settler, John Forrest, located a log cabin here in 1858. Forest Lake had a population of only six people when it was platted as part of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Territory on August 14, 1856. The first store in the community was established by Wm. H. Dickinson in 1857 and operated until 1861. A post office was established at Forest Lake on November 1, 1861, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 15, 1915. In 1865, lumberman David Cloud founded Cloud Lumber Company at Forest Lake with his brother-in-law John Moulton. The company built several mills around town before moving to their current location in 1895. In 1916, Cloud Lumber Company merged with another lumber company to form the Minnesota Lumber & Steel Corporation which remains active today. The community experienced some growth during World War II when many men from nearby Duluth enlisted and worked at various factories across the state build aircraft or shipbuilding plants. After the war ended, many of these jobs went away as technology changed and new industry became prevalent such as plastics manufacture etcetera . This also led to an loss of traffic due to people commuting instead of driving into city limits where there were more opportunities for jobs . In recent years much development has happened within walking distance either from town hall or other businesses including a Target convenience store , movie theater ( Regal )and multiple restaurants all within minutes walk from downtown . For example there is now a small shopping mall next door called "The Commons" with anchor stores like Macy's , Sears etcetera
Forest Lake was originally a small, isolated community on the edge of the forest near the present day city of Minneapolis. The community developed around a logging and fishing industry that thrived during the late 1800s. In 1907, Forest Lake was abandoned as a result of a combination of factors including population growth in Minneapolis and an increase in truck traffic through the forest. In 1969, Forest Lake was re-established as an agricultural community with access to water from nearby Clearwater Creek.
