Ham Lake is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Duluth-Moorhead metropolitan area. Ham Lake has a post office and a telephone company. The town was founded in 1871 by Norwegian immigrants who named it after Hamar, Norway. The first store in Ham Lake was built in 1872. Four years later, the town had its first school. In 1876, a sawmill and gristmill were erected on the river near present-day downtown Ham Lake. In 1902, railroad workers began construction of the Duluth-Moorhead Railroad through Ham Lake and other villages in southern Ramsey County. By 1911, all but one of the hamlet's businesses had been destroyed by fire or demolition during construction of the line; however, four stores—the Post Office (1892), First National Bank (1901), Lumberyard (1911), and grocery store (1915)—remained open until they were abandoned around 1940 due to poor health conditions among their owners or lack of use following World War II shortages of lumber resources in rural areas throughout North America. HamLake lost its commercial Appeal during WWII as many factories closed down leaving few job opportunities for local residents which made life very difficult for those that did have employment; however some people managed to find ways to make money from agriculture such as raising chickens or pigs which supplemented their income while others started small businesses like doing laundry or selling ice cream from their truck on days when there wasn't any snow on the ground
Ham Lake was first settled in 1855 by Menominee and Dakota Indians. The first post office at Ham Lake was established in 1865, and the town of Ham Lake began to be developed in 1875. The town name was changed to Battle Creek in 1917.
