In 1876, Alfred W. Hastings purchased a land grant in Hastings, Minnesota for the purpose of founding a school. In 1886,Nicholas Hastings died suddenly at age 67 while on vacation in Europe; his widow married fellow Norwegian Charles Fosdick. Charles Fosdick took over management of the community and it continued to grow until it had a population of 12,000 by 1920. In 1932, after World War II ended, Hastings became an important node in the rural electrification program that brought power to much of central Minnesota.During this time period,Hastings also saw significant growth in its nightlife as several restaurants opened up around town for customers seeking convenient access to alcohol during prohibition times. By 1978,Hastings had reached its current size with 994 residents living within walking distance of all public services including schools and libraries as well as ample parking for their growing number of visitors. The economy has changed dramatically over the years since Hastings first came into being; however some key constants have been its strong manufacturing base (including furniture production) and its focus on education - especially through nearby Lemont High School which continues to serve as one of CentralMinnesota's leading educational institutions today.
