I’m not sure if I should start with Hugo, Minnesota. It could be a very long paper if I do, but it is what it is. Hugo has been my home since 1984 and I love every minute of it. My family and I have been here for over 30 years and we are still living in the same house that we were bought in 1984. Hugo is a small town located in east-central Minnesota on the banks of the Missouri River. The population was 1,052 at the 2000 census, down from 1,827 at the 1990 census. The name Hugo comes from Norwegian explorer Thorvald Hjelmquist who discovered this place in 1854 while exploring the area for fur traders looking for new land to sell to Russians. The first white people to live in Hugo were Swedish immigrants who built a log cabin on an island in the river near where present-day Main Street meets Highway 61. In 1858, Danish settlers arrived and began farming around what is now downtown – this was before Minneapolis had been founded as a city. On July 10th, 1884, Charles Aiken opened his general store at Fourth and Washington Streets in downtown Hugo after purchasing property from John Nordstrom (the original settler). Aiken was one of many early entrepreneurs who helped develop downtown when it was known as “little Sioux City” because there were no stores or businesses other than his business until much later when streetcars became available and made shopping more convenient than traveling by horse or wagon.* In 1907, Gustavus Pate (a local farmer) erected a two-story wood frame building which served as the first post office in Hugo*. This building still stands today just south of Main Street between Sixth Avenue South and Seventh Avenue South* (* denotes former site). In 1912*, Milton Saueropened his grocery store at Fifth Street & Washington Boulevard – this store remains open today as Sauer’s Merchants Bank*. In 1916*, Clarence Jorgensenestablished another grocery store called Jorgensen’s Grocery on First Street north of Main Street*. That store too has remained open ever since* (* denotes former site).
