The area that now Mankato was first settled by European Americans in 1854 as part of what is now south Minneapolis. The name "Mankato" was chosen for its isolation from other towns in the area, and because it sounded like a French word meaning "to turn around." Mankato became a city in 1907 when it amalgamated with neighboring cities of Brooklyn Park and Eagan. The official founding date of the city's courthouse is September 15th, 1907. Mankato has been home to many industries over the years, including insurance and publishing companies before becoming an agricultural center after Prohibition ended in 1933. Manufacturing greatly increased during World War II due to demand from military veterans; however, since then manufacturing has declined while agriculture has become more dominate. In recent decades there have been efforts to revitalize Mankato through several projects such as arts festivals and new retail developments along State Street near downtown. In addition to its natural resources (crops and forests), one major component of Mankato's economy are its services which include recreation, education, government services, health care and business services. Many small businesses operate out of their homes or rented space within shopping malls or downtown areas throughout the community which helps keep prices low for residents living on average close to fast food restaurants or other high-traffic areas without much opportunity for economic development outside these areas

Mankato, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and is the county seat of Mankato County. The population was 33,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The downtown district has been called "the cultural and commercial center ofMinnesota." The first humans to live in what is now Mankato were hunters who traveled upriver from Winnipeg in Canada for fish and game during the early Ice Age. They built their first house near present-day Hastings on an island in the river that later became known as Rice Lake. In 1854, when surveyors arrived to plat out new land for Mankato Township, they included an area that includes what is now northwest Mankato in addition to what today includes northeast Minneapolis and much of southwest St Louis County. This saw the opening of one of America's earliest post offices which functioned as a warehouse until 1907 when it became home to Gopher Central College (now Hennepin University). In 1875, a group led by Ebenezer Ewing purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) southeast of present-day Mankato and developed it into what would become known as East Side townsite around a depot stop on the wagons used by ferries going downriver from Duluth on Lake Superior to Apostle Islands National Lakeshoreconnected by railways soon afterward.(Ewing donated $5,000 towards construction.) Today there are few reminders remaining from this early development period other than some working farmsteads scattered around East Side townsite including three extant churches: First Presbyterian Church (1875), Christ Episcopal Church (1900), and Park United Methodist Church (1925). East Side townsite was renamed Minneapolis after Mayor George Carlson made an address honoring American soldiers who had fought with General John Aiken at Battle Creek during World War I; east side residents responded with enthusiasm by forming their own city board which recommended renaming it Minneapolis on October 14th 1917.(See also: History - MNHistory) Between 1918 and 1922 more than 20 businesses were opened along Nicollet Mall between 7th Street North and Mississippi Avenue North including 5 jewelry stores/depots/jewelers guilds one tailor shop/dressmaker’s shop/, 8 grocers/grocery stores/, 6 drugstores/pharmacies/, 2 bars/diner/, 2 theaters/. At its peak membership number swelled past 10,000 people! Thereafter many businesses closed or moved away because OFTC density limits set at that time kept those numbers below certain thresholds making real estate investment difficult without special permits.) There continue to be remnants today evident primarily due to two factors viz., Pioneer Village & Nicollet Mall plans which redeveloped entire blocks adjacent to Nicollet Mall creating scale model neighborhoods complete with detailed street layouts visible from any given spot within minutes walk or bike ride à la “Neighbors” show produced & aired annually on PBS since 1993 beginning production 20 years ago! Mankato experienced rapid growth following World War II as demand for goods generated by U.S military production increased significantly; several large companies such as Deere & Company bought property near Nicollet Mall while others such as Ford Motor Company enlarged their facilities nearby . After deindustrialization began plaguing northwestern Minnesota following World War II many residents left for cities such as Milwaukee or Detroit leaving behind abandoned homes,. Today most homes still stand abandoned but have been carefully restored through donations or fundraising efforts aided by volunteers
Mankato was founded in 1851 by John and Anna Mankato. It is the oldest city in Minnesota. The City of Mankato was organized on December 6, 1855. In 1863, the United States Congress passed a bill to create a township in Dakota Territory, which became Mankato Township on August 14th, 1865. The first mayor of Mankato was Isaac Christiansen.
