The first firearms were used in Maplewood, Minnesota on October 8th, 1854. The rifle which was used was a shotgun called the “Hiawatha”. It had a barrel of about 36 inches and weighed about six pounds. The owner of the gun shop, John Nicolay, purchased the shotgun from Captain Lewis at Fort Snelling. He transported it to Maplewood and put it on the shelves of his store. From then until 1912, Maplewood had one of the most active rifle ranges in the state. There were many rifles being shot at this range including both shotguns and handguns. In 1912, however, maplewood changed its policy and began to only allow handguns for sale within their own town limits. This change was made because handguns were becoming more popular than shotguns inMinnesota as people started using them for protection purposes such as home defense or office work. After that time, handgun sales outside of Maplewood stopped altogether. As guns became more popular in America throughout the 1800s and into the 1900s they also became more common in Minnesota thanks to laws passed by state legislatures which allowed gun ownership by all citizens without any restrictions whatsoever. Maplewood is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 4,735 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County. The first settler in what is now Maplewood was Elisha Sawyer in 1849. The present-day town was organized on February 15, 1903 from portions of Hastings and Oakdale townships. At that time it had a population of just over 200 people. The first post office in Maplewood was established on March 12, 1903. That location closed on December 31, 1907 because of low postage rates and the Panic of 1907. In 1911, Maplewood became part of the Minneapolis–St Paul metropolitan area and its post office continued to serve as its primary address until 1966 when it moved to Eden Prairie. In 1932 the city gained cityhood and its own police department; however, this move did not coincide with the opening of Maplewood's municipal building which had been built since 1915 by local lumber dealers under contract with the Minneapolis City Council for use as a courthouse and municipal hall (later renamed Municipal Courts Building). The new municipality never entirely materialized due to legal challenges brought against it by incumbent Minneapolis Mayor James Hickey certification that only two blocks south of its municipally owned building were zoned for commercial development (the issue being resolved when Hickey withdrew his challenge). On July 1, 1965Maplewood amalgamated with neighboring Hastings to form a single municipality with a population of 6,844 people. This merger also created an urban service district within Ramsey County which provided important services such as public transportation within both municipalities while allowing each community some degree autonomy."Hastings-Maplewoods Amalgamation Ordinance," MNR Doc.# MH 81-2 On October 20th 1978Maple wood lost Rural Service District status after voters rejected an ordinance authorizing annexation into Eden Prairie by then unincorporated parts of Hubbard Lake Township. However annexation never occurred andservice district status reverted back to maple wood on January 1st 1979.
