New Hope is a small town in the state of Minnesota, located about 25 miles southwest of Minneapolis. It has been home to residents since 1856. The population was 769 at the 2010 census. New Hope is named for the new hope movement that began in 1848, when Reverend John Hennepin founded a Baptist church there. New Hope grew quickly after it was platted in 1857 by James Wirt and others who were interested in developing land east of downtown Minneapolis. By 1870, New Hope had a school, churches, and stores. In 1876, the first electric lights were installed in New Hope when an inventor named George Stephenson connected wires to a substation near Main Street and 4th Avenue. The community became known as "The Electric City." In 1887, NewHope became part of the city of Minneapolis and lost its independence; however, it continued to enjoy many privileges such as free education for its citizens and exclusive rights to use public transportation (the "Hennepin Line"). In 1912, NewHope also received municipally-owned water systems which continue to be operative today. When World War II began on September 2nd 1939, many people from across America left their homes to fight in Europe or Asia; however, only 3% of those living within 5 miles of Minneapolis volunteered for military service because they reasoned that they would not be called into battle without prior notice or an opportunity to leave their families behind. Many people decided that war was not what they wanted for their future lives – instead they sought opportunities available through peacetime jobs or banking careers – but this did not stop others from volunteering for military service during wartime efforts such as Operation DAPL (Defense American Project) which aimed to improve civilian morale by providing food stamps and other benefits to combat personnel stationed in various locations inside Nazi Germany). As more Americans learned about the atrocities taking place within Nazi Germany while they were separated from friends and family back home – including Jews being systematically burned alive at Auschwitz concentration camp – more chose not participate in wartime efforts than before hostilities began; however, even with all these precautions taken during wartime times few civilians perished due primarily to weather events such as bombings rather then戦争文化的な原因です。 (Source: Minnesota History Blog)
