Owatonna, Minnesota is a small town in the Mankato area of southern Minnesota. It was founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants and has been called "The Gateway to the North." The town is located on the Owatonna River, about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The first settler in Owatonna was Ole Olsen. He and his family arrived from Norway in 1854 and established a farmstead near present day Owatonna. In 1860, Ole's son John Olsen took over the farmstead and added another house to it. The Olensons continued to live there until their death in 1907. In 1881, Dr. Julius Juhl moved from Duluth to Mankato and started an experimental school for black children called the Black School House at 12th Street and First Avenue NW. In 1902, Dr. Juhl donated land for a new high school which became known as Owatonna High School; Owatonna Schools District #2 was formed that year. The first graduating class of Owatonna High School students were announced on March 1, 1903: Hjalmar Aasland (1902-2001), Rasmus Rasmussen (1903-2004), Leo Svendsen (1905-2005), Harold Gjerdingstad (1907-2008), Everett Fenton (1909-2010), Lars Eriksen (1920-2011). It should be noted that many current residents of Owatonna remember their childhoods before they moved here during the late 1800s or early 1900s when there were no schools or public transportation available within easy reach for most people outside of larger towns like Duluth or Minneapolis/St Paul
Owatonna was founded in 1853 by Captain David Rice, a white fur trader. The town was named for the Ojibwa word "owatonna" meaning 'place of the deer'. In 1864, Owatonna became an incorporated city. It was renamed Minneapolis on September 15, 1870, in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, the first U.S. president to be impeached and removed from office by a national vote of no confidence.
