Richfield is a town in Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The Town of Richfield was organized on February 11, 1854 and named for Captain John Richardson of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition who had explored this region during the 1850s. The first post office was established in 1865, and by 1876 it had grown to include a store, two schools and twelve residents. On January 1, 1880 Richfield became one of eighteen towns in Dakota Territory when that territory was created from parts of Minnesota and New Mexico. In 1898 Richfield voters elected George Hennepin as their first mayor and he served until 1909 when he was succeeded by Phebe McFarlane Malone. In 1916 Mayor Malone resigned after being impeached on charges including bribery and obstruction of justice; he later died in prison while serving his sentence. A new election resulted in Charles Woldenberg becoming mayor but Woldenberg resigned soon afterwards due to health problems caused by alcohol abuse which he had been combating since before World War I began In 1922 Richfield got its own water system (the first municipality to do so in the state). At that time there were only six businesses in town with a total population of about fifty people and no more than five residential buildings; today most businesses have over one hundred employees with a total community value over $225 million . On November 7, 1925 an engine house fire started near town limits which quickly grew out of control After days of fighting some 200 men were called into service from surrounding villages to quench the flames which burned for three days
