Sartell is a small town in Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sartell is located in southeastern Minnesota on the eastern bank of the River Moxie and nestles between woods and farmland on its banks. The first settler in what is now Sartell was Nicholas Killion, who came to what is now Sartell from Illinois in 1836. In 1849, John Swenson settled here and built a log cabin that still stands today. In 1857, Jacob Olson bought land here and started growing crops. He named his farm Cottage Grove after his wife's family home back east where they had lived before coming to America. The first post office opened in Sartell on November 9, 1865 (the date has been noted as "November 9th" since it was assigned to this town). The first store was operated by Jens Rasmussen and his brother-in-law Peder Christensen (1825-1906). In 1870, Rasmus Olsen added a smokehouse to his farmstead which became known as Smokey's Stop Shop until 1938 when he moved away from the area because of health concerns about smoking tobacco indoors. This stop shop served as an important link for farmers between their fields and nearby cities such as Minneapolis or Saint Paul; it also sold goods made by local residents including breads, eggs, cheese, milk products and saddles used by farmers on their horses during long drives across those Cities into central Minnesota for market trading purposes or furthering agricultural production near populated areas north of the river Moxie where Stonington lay
