In 1934, Savage merged with Browning Firearms Company to form Browning-Savage Incorporated. In 1949, Browning-Savage moved its manufacturing operations from Hartford, Connecticut to Elmira, New York and renamed themselves Browning- Stevens Incorporated. In 1970, Browning-Stevens merged with International Harvester Corporation to become International Harvester/Browning Firearms Corporation. That company was renamed again in 1987 asbrowningsportsmanincorporation after merging with Bushmaster Firearms Corp..
Savage is a small town in the Minnesota County seat of Marshall, located in the Midwestern United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 875. The community is named for General William S. Savage, Jr., who was an American general during World War I and II. In 1871, Norwegian immigrants started to settle in what would become Savage. Some of these settlers were farmers and some became lumbermen; however, all werethanked God for their new land that they had found. In 1912, the first post office was opened in Savage by Wm Hcbert and John Neely. The name "Savage" was chosen because it sounded like a animal called savage (a type of panther). The first school in Savage was built on a farm near present-day Park Rapids and operated from grades 1 through 5 until 1917 when it moved to nearby Iron Range School #2 which then operated until 1961 when it closed due to budget cuts by the state government. It reopened as part of Steele Elementary School District #1 in 1984 before being closed again with merged into neighboring Iron Range School District #2 while Steele continued operations as an independent school until consolidation occurred effective September 1, 1999; Steele ended up closing due to lack of funds from district coffers which forced closure of most schools within the district including Savage High School effective February 14, 2000 concurrent with similar closures at other high schools within Steele Township Savage has one grocery store - Gelson's Market - which opened its doors on December 15th 1984 after years of planning by local parents/community members followed by funding contributed by Twin Cities Business Incorporated (TCBI) who at that time controlled Gelson's parent company Dean Foods Company did not want another grocery store located so close to their factory plant making it difficult for customers access products needed for their jobs there; this decision helped spur development around Gelson's Market over time resulting in more than twenty-five different stores with four additional anchor stores: TCBI licensed out ownership & management rights to various restaurants/cafeterias featuring both corporate favorites such as subs made fresh daily right on site or frozen items picked up daily off truckloads coming into town ready for service thereby creating one big centralized foodservice complex known now simply as "Gelson's." Savage is a town in Grant County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. Savage was platted on February 10, 1881, by commissioners from two counties which were then part of Dakota Territory. The first post office in Savage was established on March 11, 1883. The current post office building was built in 1904 and is located at 307 S 3rd Street. In 1907, the community name changed to Marshalltown after Major General George Armstrong Custer's death in battle near present-day Marshalltown. In 1912, the town of Savage amalgamated with the neighboring towns of Cedar Rapids and Hastings to form the new city of Sioux City. The city limits included all of Grant County except for parts of Dawson and Osborne Counties that remained within Indian Territory under Ulysses S. Grant's administration until 1898 when those counties were organized into Dakota Territory again. During World War II (1939-1945), Savage served as a basecamp for American troops stationed in Europe while other local communities developed during that time period such as Winnipeg and Hastings Heights. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home and small businesses opened up around thebasecamp including a grocery store and several restaurants along with school reconstruction projects completed in 1946-48 which increased enrollment rates for rural high schools by 50%. A large shopping mall opened up downtown in 1979 namedTarget field mall which later became known as Target Center after merged with JCPenney department store chain in 1997). On July 1, 2006, Savage incorporated as an unincorporated community within Grant County. On January 1st 2009 it became a city charter city with 596 residents according to its website.
